Department of Nutritional Science Chair

The Chairperson is primarily responsible for providing broad, strategic leadership that advances the educational, research, and clinical initiatives of the department, reporting to the Dean.
**Qualifications**:
- Doctoral degree in Nutrition or,
- Master’s degree in Nutrition and a doctoral degree in a Health-Related Field
- Post-Doctoral experience in Nutrition or Health-Related Field required by July 1, 2016
- Experience teaching in higher education in Nutrition for a minimum of five (5) years
- Established track record of research in Nutrition for a minimum of ten (10) years
- Licensure as a Nutritionist or Registration as a Dietitian in the District of Columbia a plus
- Online education experience is a plus
- Prior experience as a Chairperson is a plus
Faculty recruitment, development, and evaluation; program development, review, and evaluation; student advising and mentorship; departmental budgeting and budget control; class schedule planning; and general coordination of the research, teaching, and outreach activities of the department. The successful applicant is also expected to engage in research, publish in reputable academic journals, write grants, advise students, and engage in public service at the university and in the local community.
**Responsibilities**:
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing operational action plans to meet the strategic goals and objectives of the University, College, and Division;
- Maintain accreditation standards for the Division;
- Increase collaborations, linkages, and partnerships between community and other University departments;
- Implement an efficient advisement system by faculty to foster students’ retention and progression
- Increase recruitment
- Maintain current knowledge of laws, regulations, rules, and policies governing education that are issued by local, Federal, and state accrediting agencies;
- Provide strategic, collaborative leadership and guidance that will grow, update, and enhance current departmental programs while fostering future academic collaborations throughout the Howard University community, Washington DC and beyond;
- Oversee and advise program directors in their management of accreditation and academic programs;
- Manage personnel-related activities, including but not limited to recruitment, hiring, evaluation, recommendation, etc.;
- Maintain open and ongoing communication with DNS program directors, faculty, and staff;
- Coordinate the DNS budget process and monitor all budgets, contracts, and other funds;
- Maintain appropriate records for DNS employees and students;
- Provide leadership in academic and professional goal setting and curriculum review/development for all DNS programs;
- Promote and maintain appropriate communications with affiliating institutions and agencies associated with the Department;
- Interact effectively with other HU Schools and colleges, including the School of Medicine, School of Social Sciences, and School of Dentistry and Pharmacy;
- Provide constructive feedback and assistance to faculty, staff, and students concerning their professional development and performance;
- Assume responsibility for coordinating and preparing departmental reports;
- Support plans for professional growth and excellence for faculty and staff, and play a key role in mentoring junior faculty;
- Ensure that faculty are consistently recognized among the top in their field of expertise;
- Develop and refine policies to achieve academic and faculty goals and objectives; and
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean, School of Health Professions.
