As a key member of GFL’s team, you will be committed to providing a healthy and safe work environment for all our team members. With the support of a national operations team, you will be relied upon to bring a wealth of knowledge and experience in the health and safety field that will allow you to advise on various unique obstacles that we face on a day-to-day basis. Working closely with our operational teams, Health and Safety will ensure that safety and the environment is at the top of the mind for all team members and at the forefront of all daily activities.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Develop and maintain a culture of safety excellence throughout the business.
- Assess and develop Safety and Environmental programs that meet or exceed regulatory standards.
- Liaison with environmental regulatory bodies throughout North America.
- Provide recommendations on the transportation, storage and processing of non-hazardous and hazardous waste.
- Develop, conduct, and evaluate safety training. Familiarity with PowerBI, Enablon and Learning Tracking Tools.
- Support operations in conducting incident investigations utilizing root cause analysis methodologies.
- Identify, analyze, and control hazards and risk mitigation measures
- Review, report and tend to injuries, property damages and environmental events.
- Conduct audits and inspections to evaluate safe work practices and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation.
- Communicate with employees and managers regarding insurance claims.
- Maintain a working knowledge of safety theory, regulations, and company policy.
- Review the record keeping process and branch compliance folders.
- Conduct random audits in each division.
- Support all aspects of the Environment, Health and Safety Management System Framework.
- Conform in all respects with applicable federal, provincial, state, and local laws, regulations, ordinances, and other orders and to all company policies, procedures, and directives from supervisors.
- Travel to sites, as required.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by management.

**Knowledge, Skills and Competencies**:

- Minimum requirement: Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, Engineering, Environmental Health or related field.
- 10 - 15 years’ experience in EH&S or related field.
- Knowledge of North American environmental policies and regulations.
- Possess valid driver’s license.
- Combination of education and/or experience.
- Strong understanding of NSC rules and regulations.
- Ability to identify and evaluate hazards to develop hazard control systems.
- Proven safety leadership experience with the ability to motivate and inspire.
- Experience in training and curriculum development.
- Ability to effectively communicate with managers and employees.
- Ability to write and understand reports and correspondence. Business acumen would be a benefit

**Additional Working Conditions + Physical Demands**:

- Work in indoor environment 60% of the time, remainder of time will be spend outdoors at hauling companies, transfer stations, and landfill or other physical locations
- Environmental noise level is usually moderate to loud
- Occasionally exposed to loud noise, humidity, hot and cold weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes and airborne particles
- Travel is required within continental USA
