At UConn Health in the Center for Comparative Medicine, this class is accountable for performing as a specialist in the management of laboratory animal technical services.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the limited supervision of the Director, Comparative Medicine or employee of higher grade.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Maintains/processes animal inventory and health records- Prepares internal/Federal reports- Complies with and advises investigators of various regulations and standards- Recommends departmental needs with cost, develops costs and departmental needs- Performs physical exams, including laboratory tests on incoming animals, follows up on sick reports- Advises investigators on animal models; consults with principal investigators (PI) on acquisition of animals; acts as facilitator/liaison to PI's and research technicians- Provides training in humane treatment of animals; assists in surgeries and post-operative care- Provides information/assistance to P.I.'s on drugs/procedures, costs and services used for manuscript purposes and preparation of grant proposals- Monitors sanitation status of animals; sentinel animal testing; accompanies State/Federal representatives on facility inspections- May assist in various experiments- Orders supplies- Performs related duties as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Considerable knowledge of laboratory animal science and animal research- Considerable skill in performing animal physical examinations, monitoring animals during and after surgery and assessing/evaluating sick animals- Record keeping skills- Considerable interpersonal, oral and written communication skills- Computer skills- Ability to work under stressful conditions.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field and three (3) years technical experience working in the field of laboratory animal medicine in an academic setting working with multiple animal species.- Incumbents must be certified or eligible for technologist certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, if eligible, obtain the certification within the first year of employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Incumbents in this class must be able to lift laboratory animals; incumbents may be exposed to scratching.- The position requires handling or exposure to animals, bodily fluids, contaminated carcasses or other potentially infectious materials, scratch, biting animals.- Also requires work with laboratory chemicals, chemical carcinogens or other hazardous materials.- Must be able to lift laboratory animals.- The position requires vaccination with licensed vaccines and will require medical surveillance.- Personnel must have the respiratory and physical capabilities to utilize battery-powered ventilated hoods and other required PPE and be able to tolerate necessary immunizations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current technologist certification (ALAT, LAT or LATG) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.

OR- Active Veterinary Technician Certification/License (CVT) in good standing in at least one State within the U.S.- Hands-on experience with skill in lab animal related functions working with rodents (bleeding techniques, injections, necropsy) etc.

SCHEDULE: Full time, 40 hours per week, Monday
- Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, weekends, holidays and other shifts as assigned to accommodate departmental needs, 30 minute unpaid meal break.
