Parks Assistant

**Position Summary and Job Duties**:
To perform manual labor and operate hand tools, motorized hand operated equipment and motor vehicles in the maintenance and repair of assigned parks and facilities. This may include operating a variety of vehicles and equipment such as pickups, tractors, lawn mowers, skid loaders and other various maintenance equipment.

**80% Troubleshoot, maintain and repair parks and facilities.**
- Building and facility care and maintenance, cleaning, and sanitizing of restrooms, shelters, and buildings, vandalism repair and removal of graffiti and clean up.
- Operates and maintains various vehicles and machinery.
- Constructs and repairs picnic tables and signs to include but not limited to painting, staining, installation, storage, maintenance, and other items.
- Perform various manual tasks such as painting, replacing faulty plumbing parts, repair and replace simple electrical outlets, fixtures, lights, and related work.
- Snow removal and clean up in County Parks and around other County facilities.
- During winter snow emergencies may be asked to help in Highway shop operations.

**5% Perform routine maintenance on equipment and vehicles.**
- Inspects equipment prior to use for safety and maintenance issues.
- Performs minor maintenance and repairs on equipment.
- Keeps equipment clean and in good working order.

**5% Keep current on safety related issues.**
- Become familiar with latest procedures.
- Attend all required safety related trainings.
- Report all accidents in a timely manner.

**5% Keep current with all administrative procedures.**
- Completely fill out and hand in time sheets on time.
- Fill out log book if one has been issued to you.
- Maintain accurate inventories of materials used in the performance of duties, including, but not limited to: repair parts; marking and signing accessories; materials such as gravel, limestone, asphalt, etc.

**5% Perform other duties as assigned.**

**Success Factors (KSA's)**:

- Working knowledge and experience in general maintenance work as it applies to a parks environment.
- Knowledge of the types and uses of common hand tools, materials, and standard equipment used in general maintenance, construction, and repair.
- Ability to operate light to medium construction and maintenance equipment, and snow removal equipment.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform duties in a safe manner.

**Job Requirements, Education, Training & Experience**:

- Graduation from a standard high school or vocational school or equivalent experience sufficient to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities required of the position.
- Must possess a valid Drivers License when hired and a working telephone. Must Possess and maintain a current unrestricted (not due to corrective lenses) driver's license and auto insurance pursuant to the Rock County Administrative Policy and Procedure Policy 5.02 and 5.27.

**Essential Job Functions (physical elements, equipment and working conditions)**:
Physical Elements:
Lift, push, pull: Must be able to:

- lift and carry up to 80 lbs. (4 x 6 sign post with a partner or bags of material)
- shovel gravel from truck box to wheel barrow
- lift snow fence rolls, push and roll it up to 50 feet and install 7' metal posts using a post pounder
- shovel/push snow by hand
- lift to 8 foot high signs and hold in place
- ride or push mowers for extended periods of time

Bending, squatting, kneeling: Must be able to:

- bend, squat, kneel in order to perform maintenance activities

Climbing, overhead work: Must be able to:

- climb ladder and get into truck dump box to clean it out
- enter and exit truck cab by stepping onto a step 24 inches from the ground
- work for a sustained period of time on ladders to cut tree branches, repair signs and perform truck maintenance

Equipment Use:

- a variety of vehicles and equipment such as pickups, tractors, lawn mowers and skid loaders.
- lift and operate portable power tools such as chain saws, cut off saws, rotary hammer drills and various other types of maintenance equipment.
