**Role Overview**

Performs intermediate skilled technical work performing field inspections and re-inspections of residential, commercial and industrial facilities for compliance with building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical codes, preparing and maintaining files, preparing reports and related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Building Official.

**Role Description**
- Performs building inspections including framing, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and other aspects of building.
- Plans review involving ensuring builders and general public are aware of laws and regulations; checks engineering data and specifications for proper implementation of products; enforces rules and regulations.
- Receives and reviews training on state and local laws, policies and regulations.
- Advises contractors and general public on proper building practices, pertinent regulations and other general methods for every area and type of building.
- Handles detailed phone communication that requires extensive knowledge and tact; conversations with contractors, general public, engineers, architects and other building officials.
- Creates and designs polices and methods that would allow for a higher level of service to the community, department and public; presents to the Building Official for possible implementation.
- Checks vehicle maintenance schedules; conducts emergency structure safety inspections for disasters.
- Performs related tasks as required.

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**

Thorough knowledge of all types of building construction materials and methods and stages of construction when possible violations and defects may be most easily observed and corrected; thorough knowledge with state building and related codes laws and ordinances; ability to detect poor workmanship, inferior materials, and hazards of fire and collapse; ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and blueprints accurately and to compare them with construction in process; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; ability to contact property owners, contractors and the public and to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

**Education and Experience**

High school diploma or GED with certifications and training as indicated below in the Special Requirements section and a minimum of three years of experience in residential and commercial building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical or equivalent combination of education and experience.

**Physical Requirements**

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently standing and walking and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to other accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; worker is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions, exposed to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposed to extreme heat (non-weather) and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposed to fumes or airborne particles, exposed to the risk of electrical shock and exposed to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment)
