**Position Summary/Purpose of Position**:

- The Department of English at the University of Maryland seeks a Director of Operations with personal and organizational energy and sophisticated understanding of operational requirements for a large and complex department to fulfill its commitments and aspirations. This position reports directly to the Chair and directs the administrative, staff, technical, and facilities functions of the department.**Benefits Summary**

**Minimum Qualifications**:
**Education**:

- Bachelor’s degree.

**Experience**:

- Record of success in overseeing a complex organization.
- Minimum of 10 years relevant experience required.
- Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience required, preferably within an institution of higher education.
- Demonstrated experience with organizational development and strategic planning, including the management of people and resources.
- Experience working on multi-faceted and detail driven projects, as well as completing those projects within the given deadlines and budget.
- Experience working cooperatively and effectively with senior management, staff, faculty or constituent groups across all levels of the organization and maintaining productive professional relationships in complex, demanding environments.
- Experience prioritizing goals and formulating independent decisions regarding policies, procedures and operations.
- Experience with a range of IT, data-systems, and enterprise management systems.

**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**:

- Exceptional customer service and superb oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with diverse populations, including faculty, staff, students, college and university administrators.
- Experience handling sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact. A commitment to diversity, equity, and belonging and promoting an inclusive and equitable workplace.
- Proven ability to respond positively to extreme pressures of time and workload and ability to handle multiple complex tasks simultaneously, meet deadlines, and track flow of large volumes of work.
- Proven ability to work independently with mínimal supervision in a high traffic office. Excellent organizational and analytical skills with diligent attention to detail.
- Highly collaborative style with the energy, maturity, and leadership to serve as a unifying force and position stewardship discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels.
