**Nature of Work**:

- The Library Deputy Director supports the Library Executive Director in setting the vision for GRPL services and providing leadership for the library staff and community.

The Library Deputy Director provides assistance in all phases in the operation of the library, including strategic planning, outreach, fiscal planning, and staff development. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating standards for service and overseeing major library projects. The Library Deputy Director acts as the head of the library system in the absence of the Library Executive Director.

The work of the Library Deputy Director is reviewed through evaluations of established goals and objectives, and observation of results as determined by the Library Executive Director.
**Examples of Work**:
- Oversees overall operations of the library, including patron experience, public services, community engagement, collection services, and information systems-
- Directly supervises all Librarian IV positions and various members of the Executive Team-
- Along with the Executive Director, implements the library's strategic plan-
- Along with the Executive Director and Executive Team, develops annual budget and coordinates system-wide communication throughout the process-
- Oversees all large-scope library projects as determined by the Executive Director and Executive Team-
- Is responsible for regularly assessing the physical spaces in all GRPL locations-
- Is responsible for determining best public service practices and reports findings to the Executive Team-
- Helps facilitate cross-departmental communication and collaboration-
- Actively participates in policy development-
- Keeps informed of developments in the profession and participates in professional committees and activities at the local, state, and national level-
- Develops community partnerships as designated by the Executive Director, serving as an official library representative when needed-
- Attends Board of Library Commissioner meetings and other meetings as deemed necessary-
- Performs other duties as assigned**Minimum Training and Experience**:
- Possession of a Masters Degree of Library and Information Science and 6 years of progressively responsible experience in professional library work including supervision of staff; or equivalent combination of training and experience is required.-
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance is required.-
- Must be eligible for Librarian’s Permanent Professional Certificate issued by the Library of Michigan.**Other Necessary Qualifications**:
- Ability to:- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, library officials, board members, professional groups, other employees, and the general public.
- Analyze complex management problems, evaluate performance, and prepare recommendations based on analysis.
- Plan, organize, schedule, assign, and evaluate the work of subordinate employees.
- Analyze library needs and interests in relation to library services.
- Lead, direct, and motivate staff.
- Exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
- Make effective presentations to staff, community groups, and the library board.
- Understand complex technical issues involved in furthering library services and support functions.
- Interpret library policies and objectives to interested groups and individuals.
- Drive a vehicle in order to attend certain local and state functions; travel efficiently between branches during a shift.
- Manage emotions in the workplace and maintain professional composure and judgment.
- Work with supervisor and process feedback regarding job performance.
- Establish and maintain working relationships with other staff and the general public; work collaboratively.
- Set priorities and meet deadlines; adaptability and judgment to reprioritize as needed.
- Perform standardized processes; ability to follow procedures in processing forms and other communication.
- Understand systems and maintain an organized and effective work process; flexibility to review and improve upon processes as they become dated or new information becomes available.
- Extensive knowledge of:- Managerial principles of administration and organization of libraries, including operation of a complex multi-branch library system.
- Professional library principles, practices, and techniques as they pertain to the delivery of public library services.
- In-depth knowledge and experience relevant to the major service units supervised.**Other Information**:
