**Role Overview**

Performs intermediate manual work caring for animals at the shelter, cleaning and disinfecting shelter and related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Animal Shelter Director.

**This position will average between 10 and 20 hours per week depending upon shelter needs**

**Role Description**
- Ensures health and safety of animals in shelter.
- Feeds and waters animals; observes and cares for animals showing indications of not eating or drinking or illness or injury.
- Cleans and disinfects each shelter, including cages, litter boxes, food dishes and floors.
- Stocks supply cabinets.
- Cleans animals, as needed, including eyes, ears, nose and coat.
- Completes necessary paperwork for incoming and outgoing animals.
- Answers customers questions both on phone and in person.
- Administers vaccinations or medications, as needed.
- Takes animals to vet for surgery or other medical needs.
- Performs related tasks as required

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**

General knowledge of the care and feeding of small and large domesticated animals; general knowledge in necessary safety precautions; some knowledge of animal breeds; some knowledge of common animal diseases; ability to handle animals safely; ability to carry out oral and written directions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

**Education and Experience**

High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.

**Physical Requirements**

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; frequently standing, walking, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposed to fumes or airborne particles, exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposed to outdoor weather conditions and exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment

**Special Requirements**

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Pay: From $15.00 per hour

Schedule:

- Day shift
- Monday to Friday
- Weekends as needed

**Education**:

- High school or equivalent (preferred)
