**Department Overviews: Career Services & Chicano Studies Institute**

Career Services strives to educate and empower all students and recent graduates to prepare for and pursue success. We are seeking a dynamic professional to play a major role in the vision for Career Services at UC Santa Barbara. Career Services helps undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent alumni make informed decisions about their futures by providing comprehensive resources, programs, career counseling, internships, and employment and professional/graduate school options - whether they are building upon a liberal arts education, leveraging their academic preparation in business or engineering, envisioning a future in medicine, or seeking a career in the corporate or nonprofit workforce.

Career Services’ vision is to inspire students to explore and gain knowledge of their future goals. By providing programs and resources, our office supports students to attain relevant experience and develop important relationships to address the needs and challenges of the world through their work. Career Services, a department of Students Affairs, has 16 staff members and 12 student employees.

The Chicano Studies Institute at UC Santa Barbara facilitates interdisciplinary and field-specific research as scholars and students from all disciplines pursue work that helps policy makers, fellow researchers, educators, service providers and the interested public better understand cultural and social justice issues engaged by U.S. Latina/o/x and Latin American communities. Addressing topics such as community formation, academic achievement, health education, cultural literacy, and math/science proficiency from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, the rich collaborations at the Institute cultivate a better understanding regarding the ways that local, state-wide, national and international forces interact, often times with profound impact. Of crucial importance is the Institute's role in training future generations of scholars equipped to tackle these fundamentally important issues.

**Brief Summary of Job Duties**

The Environment + Society Career Counselor is a full-time position funded by a 5-year National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. This position is a unique collaboration between Career Services and the Center for Equitable Environmental Sciences (CEES), which is housed under the UCSB Chicano Studies Institute (CSI). CEES centers on environmental justice and transforms how Hispanic/Latinx and other Underrepresented (URM) students choose and thrive in STEM majors, improving URM STEM retention and graduation rates and providing the necessary resources, skills, and training to propel URM students directly into the STEM workforce.
