Nurse Extern 2

The Nurse Extern 2 delivers basic nursing care and monitoring in accordance with completed competencies and unit needs. Identifies own learning needs and seeks opportunities to enhance practice knowledge base. Adds clinical skills to competencies and functions as a full member of the care team (see skills table below). Functions without an RN preceptor, assisting the healthcare team in implementing the plan of care and achieving desired patient and unit outcomes through effective communication and collaboration.
**Job Responsibilities
- Collaborates with the Registered Nurse (RN) on the plan of care for patient assignments. Provides basic nursing care which is deemed competent under the direction and supervision of the RN. Assists with treatments and procedures under the direction and supervision of the RN.
- Assists with unit needs to improve patient flow and unit outcomes through effective communication and collaboration and while working with the team to achieve maximum productivity.
- Assists RN and other members of the healthcare team in gathering basic monitoring data and specimen collection. Observes and reports any patient symptoms and/or change in patient conditions to the appropriate RN.
- Evaluates and maintains the environment to promote patient and healthcare team safety.
- Documents all patient care activities on assigned patients in accordance with documentation standards.
- Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
- Attends simulation exercises as assigned.
- Completes extern training, skill competency checklist and simulation labs. Works within the scope of their validated competencies at all times. Completes competencies for additional areas of responsibilities beyond Nurse Extern 1.
- May work in this capacity under the following circumstances: 1) until graduation and NCLEX determination 2) if failed NCLEX and upon mutual agreement of Inova and the team member or 3) during hired hours of the Earn while you Learn program (TBD) Performs other duties as assigned.
**Additional Requirements**
Certification - Basic Life Support Licensure - None requiredExperience - None requiredEducation - Currently enrolled nursing student with minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0, one successful clinical rotation and a reference from faculty OR pre-licensure graduate from an accredited school of nursing; has successfully completed mínimal expectations of nurse externship or is an Inova Nurse Graduate Pending Hire who has failed the NCLEX (1 time)
