**Job Title**: Fruit Inspector

**Nature of Work**:
Under general supervision, the Seasonal Fruit Inspector will be required to provide voluntary USDA inspections of apples and peaches for packers in the Eastern Panhandle via random samples. The inspection criteria are related to grade and the contract by the buyer. In addition, the Seasonal Fruit Inspector will assist with the Regulatory and Environmental Affairs Division (READ) on various programs, such as Farmers Market inspections, Home Kitchen inspections, and assisting the Food Safey Team.

**Examples of Work**:

- Obtain USDA License for Fruit Inspection Issued by USDA and/or WVDA State Program Manager within one year of start date.
- Oversee quality control inspection of apples and peaches at packing facilities from July-January.
- Be able to write a certification on the provided criteria for USDA.
- Assist with Branch Internal Quality Management System review.
- Assist with all reports.
- Assist with billing as it relates to the inspections.
- Assist other duties related to inspection and the Cooperative Agreement.
- Assist with the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, to include monitoring.
- Assist Regulatory and Environmental Affairs Division (READ) with Farmers Market inspections, kitchen inspections, etc.
- Assist READ with Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Program.
- Other duties as assigned.

**Working Conditions**:
Working outdoors. Standing for extended periods of time in the elements, walking, lifting, operating a computer and other office equipment. Throughout the state, travel is necessary, and occasional overnight stays are needed.

**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**:

- Basic knowledge of computers and software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) to retrieve and utilize information.
- Ability to write reports.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, including training materials.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from fruit growers, packers, etc.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail to maintain records and reports.

**Minimum Qualifications**:
**Education**:
High school diploma or GED is required.

**Experience**:
No experience needed (internal training will be provided)

**Additional Requirements**:

- Valid driver's license is required.
- Satisfactory completion of pre-employment drug testing.
- Satisfactory completion of pre-employment law enforcement background investigation, including DMV records.
- Must maintain a positive image of the Commissioner, West Virginia Department of Agriculture.
