Binghamton University's Services for Students with Disabilities serves students who self-disclose having a disability and request accommodations during their tenure at Binghamton, be that in the classroom, in the Residence Hall or when gaining valuable hands-on experiences at various placements. The primary purpose of the Academic Skills Navigator position is to support students connected with SSD with dedicated academic coaching support, including one-to-one and group workshops. This position will also serve as a bridge to the plethora campus resources that students at Binghamton can utilize (E.g., Tutoring, Career center, Writing Center). This position reports to the Director. Duties and responsibilities include:
- Provide one-on-one targeted intervention with students, which may include skills related to: time management and organization, study strategies, stress management, social interactions, health and wellness, role playing and social scripts, self-advocacy, daily living skills, etc.
- Work collaboratively with SSD staff to create peer mentor program, including but not limited to recruitment and onboarding of peer mentors, expectations, goals of peer mentor program, etc.
- Collaborate with SSD staff to discuss possible intervention strategies to work on with identified students as well as refer to appropriate on campus resources.
- Coordinate with SSD staff to facilitate campus wide program events and social activities.
- Organize and lead weekly check-in and accountability groups with graduate intern for students based on interest/need.
- Collaborate with the Career Center and other outside agencies to assist students in developing skills for internships and employment.
- Participate in a summer orientation program for new students enrolled in the program.
- Maintain student records, schedules, and correspondence in computer software and provide necessary data of programming when asked.
- Develop and conduct presentations including, but not limited to, Higher Education best practices under ADA; disability awareness; programmatic and UDL.
- Represent the SSD office and advocate for needs of students with disabilities committees and initiatives that occur on campus.
- Occasional evening, night or weekend work may be required.
**Job Requirements**:
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position
- Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, Social Work, Speech Pathology or related field from an accredited institution of higher education
- At least one year of experience working with adolescent to adult aged students with disabilities
- Strong attention to detail, proven experience leading complex assignments and meeting required deadlines
Preferred:
- Master's degree in Psychology, Special Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, Social Work, Speech Pathology or related field from an accredited institution of higher education
- Experience working with adolescents and young adults with mental health disorders (e.g., anxiety, depression)
- Experience with disability inclusion in higher education or related experience with disability inclusion in community or workplace setting
- Experience providing executive functioning or academic coaching, disability services or related experiences to students, preferably in a college or university setting
