The Phoenix Herpetological Sanctuary is home to reptiles from all around the world. Founded in 2001, PHS is a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 rescue and conservation facility. It has a strong connection to the community for the relocation of native wildlife and is the largest reptile sanctuary in the United States. PHS is the largest reptile sanctuary in the U.S. with roughly 1,000+ animals under its care on about 2.5 acres of property. In addition, PHS is involved in the breeding of endangered crocodilians and specific venomous snakes. PHS rescues and rehabilitates native and nonnative reptiles from the public and assists local law enforcement, animal control, and humane society with animal rescues of all kinds. PHS strongly believes that education is the key to conservation and provides educational programs to all levels of schools both private and public as well as providing on site camps, animal handling and specialized training programs and more. PHS has grown exponentially and needs to expand staff to accommodate the growth
Essential job functions:
**Primary Animal Husbandry Responsibilities**
**Mammals**
- Habitat improvement, cage cleaning, feeding, enrichment and daily care for all mammals
- Implement and prepare appropriate diet for each species.
- Keep up to date and accurate records for all mammals
- Implementation of animal enrichment
- Identify signs of stress or ailments in mammals
- Identify signs of pregnancy of mammals
- Implement and create accurate cage signage
**Medical Animal Care**
- Administer daily medications to medical animals
- Provide daily care for medical animals (feeding, cage cleaning, water changes, etc.)
- Keep accurate and up to date husbandry care records for medical animals
- Maintaining a clean and sterile working environment
**Additional Animal Husbandry Responsibilities**
**Lizards/Amphibians**
- Habitat improvement, cage cleaning, feeding, and daily care for all lizards/amphibians
- Implement and prepare appropriate diet for each species.
- Keep up to date and accurate records for all lizards/amphibians
- Identify signs of stress or ailments of lizards/amphibians
- Identify signs of egg laying behavior and pregnancy of lizards/amphibians
- Implement and create accurate cage signage
**Snakes**
- Habitat improvement, cage cleaning, feeding, and daily care for all snakes
- Implement and prepare appropriate diet for each species.
- Keep up to date and accurate records for all snakes
- Identify signs of stress or ailments of snakes
- Identify signs of egg laying behavior and pregnancy of snakes
- Implement and create accurate cage signage
**Crocodilians (under 5 feet in length)**
- Habitat improvement, cage cleaning, feeding, and daily care for all crocodilians under 5 feet in length
- Implement and prepare appropriate diet for each species.
- Keep up to date and accurate records for all crocodilians under 5 feet
- Identify signs of stress or ailments of crocodilians
- Identify signs of egg laying behavior and pregnancy of crocodilians
- Implement and create accurate cage signage
**Turtles/Tortoises**
- Habitat improvement, cage cleaning, feeding, and daily care for all turtles/tortoises
- Implement and prepare appropriate diet for each species.
- Keep up to date and accurate records for all turtles/tortoises
- Identify signs of stress or ailments in turtles/tortoises
- Identify signs of egg laying behavior and pregnancy of turtles/tortoises
- Implement and create accurate cage signage
**Additional Facility Responsibilities**
**Record Keeper**
- Keep up to date daily animal care records
- Keep up to date USDA records
- Keep a clean and organized animal care binder
**Volunteers**
- Help train new volunteers
- Assist established volunteers with issues/questions
- Direct volunteers to tasks
**Property Maintenance**
- Watering/caring for plants
- Raking/clearing paths and walkways
- Organization/cleanliness of supplies
- Removing weeds/ trimming trees and bushes
- Repair broken infrastructures
- General AC maintenance (replacing AC filter pads, no technical experience needed)
- Awareness of seasonal changes
**Animal Intake/Outtake**
- Assist in daily animal adoptions/surrenders
- Asist in animal rescue
**Ordering/Purchasing Supplies**
- Notifying management when supplies are needed
- Ordering approved supplies online
- Regular stops to stores to purchase supplies that PHS needs
**Public Education Programs**
- Assist with on-site education programs when needed
- Educate/answer questions from the public about proper husbandry for reptiles when necessary
**Required**
- Minimum of 18 years old.
- Drivers license in good standing, must be insurable.
- Must be responsible, dedicated, and hardworking.
- Must be responsive to phone calls while working.
- Must be punctual and reliable, tardies and absences affect the team and may affect the care we provide for the animals.
