CORRECTION OFFICER at SCHUYLKILL COUNTY PRISON

**General Summary**:
Supervise inmates on assigned shift, enforce rules and regulations to ensure inmate security and safety, and the safety of self and others. Perform security checks, process incoming commitments, prepare forms and update records.

**Essential Duties and Responsibilities**:
1. Observe inmates, monitor behavior during block-out, yard-out, visits, meals and prison activities, communicate established limits for behavior and consequences, enforce rules of conduct and security, prepare written or verbal reports of significant violations or irregularities to shift supervisor.

2. Inspect cells, dormitories, yard, work locations and other assigned areas within the facility for unauthorized objects or materials; conduct inmate counts; check sanitary conditions, fire and safety hazards.

3. Certify commitment, transfer or discharge documents; evaluate and screen inmate, conduct body search, store or return personal belongings; fingerprint, photograph, prepare identification and distribute uniform.

4. Assist in averting fights, riots or escapes; assist in physically suppressing aggressive acts undertaken by prisoners, in accordance with established policy.

5. Distribute cleaning and sanitation supplies, personal laundry and bedding for inmates.

6. Complete forms and update records to ensure ongoing documentation of operations.

7. Operate control panels in control room to secure or release doors and locks.

Thorough knowledge of tenets of correction officer training. *

Thorough knowledge of department policy, procedure, rules and regulations. *

Advanced knowledge of penal codes. *

Advanced knowledge of criminal psychology.

Advanced knowledge of behavior modification techniques.

Ability to recognize threatening situations and take appropriate action.

Ability to remain calm when confronted with hostile actions and verbal abuse.

Ability to prepare accurate and consistent records.

Ability to adhere to strict guidelines regarding policy and procedure.

Ability to demonstrate physical fitness to include standing or walking for extended periods of time, keen visual and hearing acuity, and physically restraining inmates in crisis.

Work is performed alone in an environment which poses an ongoing threat to personal safety. Work requires a constant state of alertness and responding to angry and upset individuals. Work may be performed on a rotating or irregular schedule.
