DEFINITION

This position is responsible for performing demolition work, including backfilling the site area, in various locations throughout the City. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Demolition Crew Leader, the Director of the Bureau of Neighborhood Services or his/her designee.

EQUIPMENT/JOB LOCATION

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Work involves, but is not limited to the following: operates motor vehicles and equipment such as tri-axle dump trucks, track hoes, air compressors, dump trucks, snow plows, tractors back hoes, front end loaders, snow plows, tractor trailer, snow blower and bull dozer, as necessary. Loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, pipe, and timber (weighing up to 75 lbs.). Digs and backfills, and performs general demolition duties. Acts as a flagman, sets barricades, assists co-workers, and maintains a safe working environment. Maintains daily records and reports on work completed. Performs preventative maintenance on all equipment used and inspects vehicle for faulty equipment. Enters exits and performs work at the demolition site. Remains alert and reacts appropriately to audio and/or visual alarms on vehicular equipment and gas detectors. Performs minor maintenance on equipment and fixtures being used. Completes all job assignments in an efficient, consistent and timely manner. Maintains regular, punctual and predictable attendance. Reports to work and remains at work in a productive condition which includes not being under the influence or impaired by the use of alcohol and/or drugs. Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Ability to operate hand and small power tools.

Ability to operate various motor vehicles and equipment such as tri-axle dump trucks, track hoes, backhoes, front end loaders, tractor trailers, snow plows, air compressors, snow blower and bull dozer.

Ability to operate all tools and equipment in accordance with safety requirements.

Ability to adapt to situations involving repetitive duties and remain alert with respect to dangers involved in demolition.

Ability to perform preventative maintenance on equipment.

Ability to react quickly and appropriately to hazardous situations.

Ability to understand and follow directions.

Ability to use considerable skill in manipulating and operating all equipment.

Ability to perform manual work involving extensive walking, often under adverse weather and working conditions.

Good knowledge of hand and small power tools.

Thorough knowledge of demolition practices as well as basic building and construction technology.

Some familiarity with demolition regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Automatic upgrade after three consecutive years of service as a Demolition Specialist I and satisfaction of the Demolition Specialist II requirements, contingent on successfully obtaining a Pennsylvania Commercial Driver’s License, Class A.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Six (6) months experience in the demolition area preferred.

A validPennsylvania Commercial Driver's License, Class B.

Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Pay: From $48,119.06 per year
