This Sworn Deputy Sheriff position is assigned to the Patrol Division responsible for answering calls-for-service from the community and patrolling Shenandoah County in a manner that enhances public safety.

Essential Job Functions

- Builds and maintains positive relationships with the community.
- Employs officer safety and safe vehicle operations.
- Answers calls-for-service - responds to and handles inquiries or incidents.
- Provides emergency medical or mental health services-resources to those in need - the injured, abused and neglected, or self-harmed.
- Conducts security checks and patrols of county to prevent or detect criminal activity.
- Enforces the law to stop or deter crime - makes stops and arrests, obtains charges, issues summons or utilizes discretion.
- Conducts initial and follow-up investigations of reported crimes, other incidents, and traffic crashes.
- Processes crime scenes - produces drawings-sketches, photographs, and other audio-visual recordings.
- Safeguards the integrity of seized property and/or evidence.
- Serves criminal and civil process - processes arrestees and paperwork.
- Prepares cases for court and presents testimony or evidence in official proceedings.
- Guards and transports persons in custody - maintains control and ensures welfare.
- Provides crowd or traffic control and assists motorists to safeguard public.
- Assists with animal-related matters as needed.
- Aids with disasters, searches, special operations, and/or critical incidents.
- Utilizes records management systems - documents activities, writes reports, and/or queries information.
- Maintains confidentiality of information, secures and retains (or expunges) records as required.
- Prepares and disseminates social media posts.
- Collects and/or records statistical data-information to be released to community and others.
- Prepares other reports or documents as needed.
- Attends staff meetings and provides periodic status reports as directed.
- Provides instruction, training and/or presentations as needed.
- Maintains professional appearance and keeps assigned equipment in a state of operational readiness.
- Meets applicable training and accreditation standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Licenses or Certifications
- Virginia Driver’s License
- Virginia Law-Enforcement Officer Certification
- Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN)
