**Position Overview**:
The Staff Archaeologist is a full-time, exempt-status position, working within the Historic Preservation and Collections Department under the direct supervision of the Principal Archaeologist and indirect supervision of the Director of Preservation (“Director”). In addition to supporting the overall mission of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association and the Department to study and preserve the Association’s archaeological resources, the Staff Archaeologist is charged with conducting archaeological excavations and maintaining the department’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The Staff Archaeologist works with the Principal Archaeologist to maintain consistency and quality control of Mount Vernon’s buried resources.

The Staff Archaeologist works in close collaboration with peers in the broader Historic Preservation program and across the estate. The role also leads and supervises the work of the Project Archaeologist(s) and Archaeological Technicians in support of these efforts.

**Compensation**:
Starting at $57,000

**Expected Hours**:
40 hours/week

**Responsibilities**:

- Contribute to archaeological research designs, excavation strategies and field methodologies, project timelines, and budgets for all phases of archaeological research, and stewardship of cultural resources.
- Collaborate with the Principal Archaeologist to coordinate daily archaeological fieldwork, lead and manage archaeology field staff and volunteers in advancing archaeological research and mitigation goals; actively coach and develop staff.
- Collaborate with the Director and Principal Archaeologist to develop broader archaeological research priorities, to develop, monitor, and report on workplans and budgets.
- Oversee the creation and maintenance of geospatial information in Mount Vernon’s GIS database.
- Prepare and assist in preparation of interim field reports, as needed, and, in collaboration with the Principal Archaeologist, Project Archaeologists, and Curator of Preservation Collections, final archaeological reports, with outputs prepared for inclusion in the Mount Vernon archive.
- Collaborate with the Curator of Preservation Collections in accessioning archaeological objects into the Preservation Collection, developing written and photographic documentation.
- Monitor all ground disturbing activities on Association property. Work closely with Mount Vernon Operations & Maintenance staff to steward Mount Vernon’s above and below ground resources, and mitigate any impacts to the landscape.
- Deliver archaeological tours and presentations, and support public outreach efforts. Willingness and ability to interact with Mount Vernon’s diverse public audiences, stakeholders, and descendant communities.
- Assist with interpreter training and dissemination of archaeological discoveries to ensure that all Mount Vernon employees are familiar with the archaeological program.
- Regularly present results of fieldwork and research at annual professional meetings and symposia.
- Manage administrative tasks as assigned.
- Undertake other duties as assigned.

**Qualifications**:

- M.A. in Historical Archaeology, Anthropology, History or closely related field, ABD or PhD preferred.
- A minimum of three years of field experience excavating historic sites, one year of supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of archaeological methods and theory, including history and material culture of the British Atlantic world, field methodologies and associated technologies, artifact analyses, database functionality, and public interpretation.
- Experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), advanced training/certification preferred.
- Excellent communication skills, reflected in strong and effective writing and speaking, as well as excellent diplomacy skills.
- Flexibility, reliability, and the ability to occasionally work beyond a normal work day.
- Ability to successfully complete a security background check.
