**Primary Purpose of the Position**:
The position directly supervises the Curator of Living Collections, and reports to the Director of Living Collections.
**Key Responsibilities**:

- Rotating through animal care areas to provide care;
- Directly supervising staff, including organizing and leading staff meetings, creating staff schedules, assigning work, and evaluating performance;
- Managing swing coverage by coordinating with animal care unit staff and section leadership to identify and address animal care needs, creating and reviewing calendars, tracking staff work assignments and care strings, and producing reports on rotations and coverage;
- Continuously monitoring the health and wellbeing of Museum animals;
- Providing skilled care to all kinds of animals including freshwater and marine fish, small mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, and terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates;
- Maintaining, servicing, modifying, and installing animal habitats, habitat components, animal care facilities, and animal life support systems;
- Recording and directing the recording of data using database management software, paper logs, and other formats as part of routine data entry and recordkeeping tasks;
- Reviews and approves animal records created by staff they supervise;
- Designing, coordinating, or delivering a range of educational programs and guest experiences such as keeper talks, live animal presentations, or animal care internships;
- Recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, supervising, and developing staff, interns, and volunteers;
- Using creative problem solving, a broad understanding of Museum animals and operations, and strong teamwork skills to advance the museum mission and the work of Living Collections;
- Using strong verbal and written communication skills to work effectively in a variety of formats and platforms including in person, office software, and an animal records database;
- Working on-site and in person, including frequent weekends, some holidays, and inclement weather as required;
- Participates in after-hours animal care and emergency responses as needed on a 24-hour, 365-day basis to protect the immediate health and safety of Museum animals;
- Creating and maintaining a positive, inclusive, and engaging environment for staff, colleagues, and guests.

**Position/Physical Requirements**:

- Regularly lift over 40 pounds.
- Climb stairs and ladders.
- Work in tight spaces.
- Operate motor vehicles during the day and night.
- Endure outdoor field conditions at any time of year.
- Negotiate uneven terrain on foot.
- Valid N.C. driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
- Ability to obtain certification in first aid and CPR within 90 days of employment.

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies**:

- Demonstrated experience providing animal care in a professional setting including the housing, nutrition, husbandry, or health management of a range of animals.
- Demonstrated knowledge of modern practices for animal care and welfare, including the practices and standards used by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums or American Association of Zookeepers or American Veterinary Medical Association.
- Demonstrated experience recognizing and monitoring the health and wellbeing in animals under human care.
- Demonstrated experience in handling live animals.

**Management Prefers**:

- Demonstrated experience in the supervision and direction of staff to work in a productive, effective, and efficient manner through sound planning, organizing, coaching, and directing.
- Demonstrated experience with communication and the use of zoological record keeping systems such as RaptorMed.

Bachelor's degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution **and** four years of museum or related work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
