Gillispie School, an independent, coeducational day school located in downtown La Jolla, enrolling students from age two through Grade Six, is hiring a Lead Preschool Teacher. This full-time position begins August 12, 2024.

A Gillispie EC Teacheris a constructivist educator with a deep respect for young children who is committed to their own life-long learning. Early childhood educators at Gillispie School team teach in nurturing, inquiry-based environments, which meet the cognitive, emotional, social, and physical needs of young children. Teachers co-research topics with children and colleagues to create a curriculum that supports inquiry-based, experiential learning. Daily documentation, reflection meetings, and analysis of children’s experiences are used as tools to deepen and extend learning.

The responsibilities of EC Teachers include, but are not limited to, the following:
**Philosophy, Curriculum, and Instruction Responsibilities**
- Actively working to implement an emergent curriculum approach in the classroom: questioning, observing, documenting, reflecting (as aligned with the philosophy of Reggio Emilia)
- Planning curricular aspects that offer opportunities for student learning to develop in an emergent manner
- Ability to prioritize and support multiple projects and requests by co-teacher and peer teachers
- Supervising children with an eye to their safety and wellbeing, including the ability to make sound judgments and to take immediate action during emergency situations

**Communication and Professionalism Expectations**
- Punctual, consistent attendance for each school day, including days when faculty meetings occur
- Maintaining a professional appearance
- Communicating with parents in a consistent, respectful, productive manner
- Meeting twice a year for parent conferences and being available for additional parent conferences as appropriate
- Engaging with children in a gentle, positive, nurturing manner
- Maintaining a calm, pleasant demeanor even while dealing with multiple sensitive interpersonal situations simultaneously
- Working as an effective, respectful, cooperative team member with all co-workers and supervisors

**Physical Demands**

This is a full-time, on-campus position and requires the ability to move around campus and engage in different activities. These activities include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Standing, sitting, and kneeling—to be at the level of students—for extended periods of time, both in the classroom and on the playground
- Occasionally lifting or shifting somewhat heavy items (typically 20-60 pounds) in the classroom and on the playground (e.g., tires in the gross motor skills area)

**Minimum Qualifications include**:

- 12 ECE units; Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Early Childhood Education or related field preferred
- At least three years teaching experience in a classroom setting, preferably within a play-based, social constructivist environment

**Salary Range**

This is a full-time, non-exempt teaching position. The estimated range in pay for this position is $20-$28 per hour. This will be paid on a 10-month basis. This is the lowest to highest salary we reasonably expect to pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. An employee's pay within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, performance, and organizational needs. Benefits include paid holidays, paid sick and personal leave, medical insurance, dental insurance, vision, and a matching 403b retirement plan.
