The Skirball Cultural Center seeks to engage a two-year **Research Fellow **with a deep and expansive knowledge of Persian Jewish culture, history, and art. The fellowship’s focus will be to research and recommend art and artifacts or identify long-term loans for the Museum’s 30,000-object collection of art, ephemera, and Judaica. This position will also propose several directions for future Skirball exhibitions related to Persian Jewish identity that align with the Skirball’s mission as a Jewish American cultural institution that celebrates discovery and hope, fosters human connections across generations and communities, and inspires visitors to help build a more just society.

**Contract Timeframe**:Fall 2024 through Fall 2026

**Compensation**:Research Fellow will receive a monthly stipend of $4,500-$5,800, based on prior academic and professional experience. Additional funds available for travel research.

**Contract Scope, Deliverables, and Responsibilities**:

- Conduct research on local, regional, and national collections and engage with private collectors, institutional colleagues, and other specialists
- Meet biweekly with the Museum Director, Chief Curator, Associate Curator, and Collections Specialist—and quarterly with the Head Registrar—to receive input and direction that guides further research.
- Submit a biweekly progress report to the Museum Director, Chief Curator, Associate Curator, and Collections Specialist.
- Consult with Skirball curators and registrars to gain insight into Skirball exhibition history and audiences, lessons learned from prior projects, and best practices
- Consult with Deputy Director to develop budget estimates for each proposed exhibition concept
- Submit recommendations of potential acquisitions every six months (four times in total) throughout the two-year fellowship
- Generate three well-developed concepts for potential exhibitions on aspects of Persian Jewish history that directly align with the Skirball’s mission and audience goals and speak to the themes of immigration and/or pluralism, to be accompanied by a sample exhibition checklist as well as potential audiovisual and interactive components
- Submit a final proposal to the Museum Director with a comprehensive description of three concepts and accompanying materials outlined above by Fall 2026.

**Contractor Qualifications**:

- Extensive knowledge of Persian—and Persian American—Jewish history, culture, and art
- Expertise in Persian Jewish artists/writers/histories from marginalized communities (women, BIPOC, LGBTQ)
- Demonstrated record of successfully researching objects for acquisition and display
- Familiarity with archives and collections of Persian Jewish art and artifacts
- Fluency in Farsi
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, flexibility, and attention to detail, deadlines, and follow-through
- Affinity for working consultatively and incorporating the input of others
- Personal resonance with the Skirball’s mission and values
- **Preferred**:Proficiency in reading Hebrew; prior experience conceptualizing and planning museum exhibitions
