Carpenter Helper

Deep Roots Craftsmen, a historic preservation contractor is looking for a preservation carpenter helper to join our team. The work would start at a project in Brattleboro Vermont in the spring and ideally transition into work in the mountains of Colorado for the summer season.
The position will require a unique person looking to acquire valuable skills and travel for the summer season to get great experience as part of a larger historic preservation team. The summer backlog is full with a variety of projects from logwork and general historic preservation work, to window and door restoration.
Housing would be fully provided by the company, creating a unique chance to travel the country.
Most of our projects are partly state-funded, leading to an interesting and always varying range of non-profit clients and project sites. Our projects have ranged from historic barns, to school houses, to churches to museum spaces and additions/ renovations on private homes. Each job is unique in its elements but consistent in their adherence to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.
**Duties, and Responsibilities**:
As a preservation carpenter helper, you would be completing all facets of historic preservation work in the field as a member of a small crew of 2-5 workers. The range of skills and tasks varies by job but general labor, painting, rough and finish carpentry skills, knowledge of structural concepts, siding installation, and window/door construction will all come into play. Tasks often include work in other preservation trades such as demolition, basic masonry, and other finish work.
**Required Skills and Qualifications**:
- First and foremost a positive attitude and interest to learn every day
- Background, familiarity, and/or interest in historic preservation is preferred
- Interest and ability in working well with others and tackling different tasks on each job
- Familiarity with historic projects abiding by the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards is a plus
- Timber framing, joinery, and logwork experience is a large plus.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints is a plus
- Valid driver’s license is required
- Ability to lift over 50 pounds and have general physical well-being to sustain 40 hour work weeks of challenging hands-on work
- OSHA safety training and/or familiarity is a plus
**Compensation and Benefits**:
- Pay will be commensurate upon experience, ranging from $20-25 an hour
- Per diem pay on the road

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
Expected hours: 30 - 45 per week
