The Department of Parks and Recreation and Urban Park Ranger (UPR) program falls under the Agency's Support Services Division. It is comprised of four separate, but interdependent program components, charged with responsibility for park patrol, reporting, facility access and environmental education activities. The Urban Park Ranger performs the general duties and responsibilities involved in the Resource Education and Public Use Management Program of the parks. The incumbent Ranger is an essential employee required to work rotating shifts, weekends and all legal holidays recognized by DC Government.

**Duties and Responsibilities**

The incumbent of this position presents one-on-one briefings, lectures, multi-media shows, structured talk, guided tours and other presentation about park resources and usage and rules and regulations to individuals and groups. Conducts research through readings, site studies, hiking, guidebooks, and lectures to expand knowledge about the natural and cultural resources of the park. Participates in planning, arrangement, and marketing of special events and festivals highlighting DPR programs and resources. Monitor and report on the condition of park resources; identify and mitigate potential resources problem through immediate attention and corrective actions. Develop and implement plans to address resources management and conservation issues. Open and close park sites monitor restricted access after-hours through control measures.

Applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the CS-07 grade level, or its non-District equivalent gained from the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

**Licenses and Certifications**

Possession of a valid driver’s license is preferred.

**Working Conditions/Environment**

While some work may be performed in an office setting, most of the work is performed outdoors in all kinds of weather and climatic conditions. The work is performed at various hours of the day and night and for prolonged periods during emergency situations. Incumbent is required to operate motor vehicles of various types. Emergency law enforcement operations will require entry into hazardous environments, exposure to dangerous persons, animals, and substances and potential exposure to infectious diseases.

**Essential Designation**: This position has been designated as an essential employee position under the provisions of District Personnel Manual, Chapter 12. As such, your services may be required in emergency situations to perform crucial duties, i.e., snow removal, debris removal, transportation, shelter operations, food distribution, and communication. These duties may be performed when the government is closed or when most employees are dismissed early.
