**THE POSITION**
Under supervision of a Payroll Supervisor, performs a variety of technical payroll accounting duties to assure that District employees are paid in an accurate and timely manner; prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports related to the payroll function.

CURRENT OPENING: One 12 month/40 hours per week position. Salary placement will be on Range 24 of the CSEA Salary Schedule "B." Initial salary placement for new employees is customarily at step 1 ($25.95 per hour) of this salary range.

**Essential Duties**:

- Assembles, tabulates, calculates, verifies, and files payroll data.
- Prepares and enters data for internal or external computer processing.
- Processes documents involved in payroll transactions.
- Performs general accounting clerical duties, including filing, duplicating, and answering the telephone.
- Performs responsible tasks related to the preparation and management of payroll records, reports and general accounting.
- Works with computer-based payroll systems in preparing input to the computer and using output reports.
- Performs financial record keeping operations related to one or more of the district's payroll activities.
- Prepares and verifies the accuracy of various financial and statistical reports, and indices required by federal, county, state, and other agencies.
- Balances computer prepared reports and specific accounts for reporting purposes.
- Assists in the revision, formulation, and implementation of payroll record keeping systems and procedures.
- Prepares account analyses, when required.
- Provides management and supervisors with accurate and timely reconciliations.
- Provides documents and explanations to auditors.
- Checks timesheets for accuracy.
- Establishes regular communication process with district personnel, site administrators, county and state offices to facilitate information and learning exchange.
- Resolves problems with payroll warrants.
- Assists in enhancing operational performance.
- Performs other related duties as directed.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS AMONG RELATED CLASSES
A Payroll Supervisor plans, organizes, directs, coordinates and supervises the District payroll section.
A Senior Payroll Technician performs complex technical payroll functions related to processing and maintaining a variety of payroll records and reports, and serves as a lead person and assists in monitoring the flow and completion of payroll work.
A Payroll Technician performs basic technical payroll functions related to processing and maintaining a variety of payroll records and reports.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Employees in this classification use a computer, use fingers repetitively, use both hands simultaneously, use a telephone, hear normal voice conversation, speak clearly, sit, walk, stand, reach, see small details, repetitive twisting or pressure involving wrists or hands, rapid mental/muscular coordination, stoop/bend, push, pull, carry and lift up to 25 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employees in this classification work inside, with high volume of work and tight deadlines, in direct contact with District personnel and public, occasionally without direct supervision, continuous interruptions and changing priorities, with exposure to minor contagious illnesses (cold, flue, etc.).

**Minimum Qualifications**:
**Education**:
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.

**Experience**:
Two years of experience in financial record keeping and reporting, involving computer and web-based accounting systems.

Knowledge of:

- Methods, practices and terminology of payroll and financial record keeping.
- Modern office methods, procedures and equipment.
- Computer-based payroll and accounting systems.
- Accounting, payroll and fiscal control standards and procedures.
- Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Internet browser, and other computer software.
- Financial analysis and reporting, including report preparation and formats.

Ability to:

- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Make mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy.
- Work effectively as part of a team.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
