This position works under the direction and supervision of the classroom teacher in the Sarah Dooley Center for Autism serving children with a variety of special needs. Working in a collaborative, team-based model, the Classroom Assistant works with selected students to implement individual lesson and behavioral plans. Work is performed using a systems approach that follows the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis and other evidence-based teaching methods.

All work is performed safely, effectively,to the highest ethical standards, and in accordance with regulatory and accrediting standards and St. Joseph's Villa's mission, values, and guiding principles.

**ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS**

Maintains sight and sound supervision of students.

Models appropriate behavior:punctuality, decorum, stress management and conflict resolution.

Develops appropriate adult-child relationship to facilitate learning social, community, and life skills.

May administer medications in accordance with program procedures.

Informs classroom teacher when the student is experiencing behavioral or learning challenges or when materials are needed.

Implements behavior management system and individual behavior plans as designed by the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) and Treatment Team.

Maintains documentation regarding students as required: incident reports, behavior plans and behavior data.

Transports students to activities in the community as directed.

Assists students with personal care and personal hygiene as needed, including providing assistance with feeding, toileting, washing, and diapering. May feed students via feeding tube.

Uses approved behavior management techniques to work with students in crisis.

Attends and participates in scheduled staff meetings and trainings.

Evaluates work processes and methods and submits recommendations for continuous quality improvement.

Attends scheduled training programs for professional development that includes, at a minimum, trainings required by St. Joseph's Villa and by regulatory and accrediting bodies.

Performs other duties as assigned.

**QUALIFICATIONS**

HS required with experience working with relevant population and at least 21 years of age. BS/BA degree in education or a related field preferred. Experience with Windows, Outlook, and MS Word preferred. Experience with proprietary software preferred. Valid VA driver’s license with excellent driving record.

**KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**

Knowledge of ABA principles, basic classroom procedure and appropriate intervention procedures with socially, emotionally, cognitively and developmentally challenged children ages 2 - 22. Basic academic skills necessary to effectively perform the responsibilities of the position. Able to creatively organize and implement a variety of supplemental programs for the students. Knowledge of basic first aid procedures. Knowledge of appropriate methods of physical restraint and able to implement those methods appropriately. Able to appropriately use proprietary software. Able to work effectively in collaborative, shared leadership environment. Able to be flexible and appropriately handle stressful situations. Able to be an effective role model.
