**GENERAL PURPOSE**:

- Under general supervision, plans, assists with and participates in providing various recreation programs at a recreation site, facility or specialty area in the Parks and Recreation Department, ensures safety of program participants; and performs other related duties.

**SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED**:

- Works under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor or Neighborhood Center Manager, does not exercise supervisory responsibilities.

**DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS**: This is the journey level in the Recreation Leader job series. This class may be distinguished from the entry level Recreation Aide and lower level Recreation Specialist by the nature and difficulty of work performed.

**PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Organizes, develops and provides recreational and cultural programs and games for children of all ages and adults at a recreation facility; assists with after school programs, arts and crafts activities, dance classes, oversees game room and open gym activities.
- Enforces and explains policies and procedures to patrons in all areas within the Parks and Recreation programs and facilities; handles complaints; observes patrons in the prograM/Facility areas; observes patron/program participants’ behavior and safety hazards of the grounds/facility.
- Schedules center-based and community integration activities and field trips; organizes and chaperones field trips; assists with special events.
- Serves as a liaison between community center clubs/classes and center management.
- Participates in planning, conducting and evaluating events, projects and programs; oversees Commission on Aging meetings; schedules speakers, ensures proper room set-up and documents meeting minutes.
- Oversees and processes requests for transportation to and from community events as well as space requests for special center-based activities.
- Monitors facilities and grounds for cleanliness and safety, assists with facility maintenance duties to prepare assigned facility for use; reports items to be repaired or replaced.
- Completes written reports; maintains accurate written records of accidents and other incidents that occur on the park grounds or in the Recreation facilities; notifies supervisor of accidents and incidents. Keeps accurate recording of time worked.
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education and Experience**:
Possession of an Associate’s degree **_f_**rom an accredited college or equivalent college credits in Parks and Recreation, Leisure Services or a related field; AND one (1) year experience in parks and recreation program management; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

**Required Licenses or Certifications**:

- Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License.

**Required Knowledge of**:

- City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
- City Code, City Ordinances, Standard Operating Manual, personnel policies and procedures,
- Methods and techniques for recreation program planning, execution and facility maintenance.
- Recreation activities for children, adolescents, adults, and senior citizens.
- Methods, techniques, rules, and regulations in a variety of competitive games and sports.
- Safety practices including first aid.
- Standard office principles and procedures.
- Personal computer usage and applicable software

**Required Skill in**:

- Developing and implementing program enhancements and corrections.
- Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
- Promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
- Following oral and written instructions.
- Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff, City departments, outside agencies, community groups, program participants, and the general public.

**Physical Demands / Work Environment**:

- Work is performed 50% of the time in a standard office environment, and 50% of the time work may be performed outdoors with time spent in moderate to high temperatures (above 90 degrees).
