**Full-Time ESL/GED Teacher with ESL Focus**

**Division**:Academic

**Status**:Exempt

**Report to**:School Principal

**Hours**:8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday

**Purpose of position**

Excellent teachers are critical to the success of The Next Step Public Charter School. The Next Step teachers engage and motivate young adults by developing positive relationships with them, designing instruction that meets their needs, and supporting them as they face academic and life challenges. The Next Step Public Charter School Day Program is looking for a full-time **ESL/GED Teacher with ESL Focus**. We offer competitive salaries based on education, experience and certifications. Our compensation package accounts for time planning on site and from home.

**Major Requirements**
- Hold a B.A. or higher degree in education with a concentration or endorsement in ESL, TESOL or ELA (or closely related field plus ESL/TESOL certification; e.g. _PRAXIS II ESL_)
- Experience designing and delivering curricula for ELLs across multiple levels of proficiency
- Experience designing and delivering curricula in English language, with emphasis in reading comprehension and language acquisition strategies for both ELLs and native English-speaking learners (including secondary and post-secondary level)

**Other Qualifications**
- Certified or eligible for certification in the District of Columbia
- Master’s degree
- Have experience working in a multicultural setting serving students ages 16 to 30
- Familiarity with standardized assessments used in adult education such as the GED, TABE, CLAS-E, CEFR, ACCUPLACER and other similar tests;
- Have experience working in a multicultural/multilingual setting serving students ages 16 to 30
- Familiar with both pedagogy and andragogy best practices
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred

**Essential Skills (including technical skills)**
- Familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Schoology for planning and instruction, such as file sharing and database software, electronic grade books, interactive whiteboards, instructional websites and software, etc.
- Ability to infuse literacy and technology skills across the curriculum
- Classroom management skills, including motivation and setting clear expectations
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with students from diverse backgrounds
- Success working with students who face extraordinary challenges, including recent immigrants, teen parents, students with learning disabilities, and disengaged youth

**Responsibilities**
- Teach primarily English as a Second Language, and work collaboratively with teacher/s
- Review, reference, and adhere to TNS teacher delivery standards and blended teaching competencies rubric used for performance evaluation
- Implement Gradual Release of Responsibility, Literacy (including digital) across the Curriculum, and Differentiation (GLAD) as school instructional initiatives
- Create a learning environment that develops skills for newcomers and beginners as well as fosters postsecondary success for English Language Learners (ELLs) and other non-native adult learners
- Actively participate in the development of curricula that is relevant to the lives of students and aligned with school goals
- Effectively teach both small classes (3-5 students) and large (18-25 students), either online or in-person, to students at a wide range of academic levels, learning styles, unique interests and needs
- Effectively teach academic life skills, including goal-setting, independent work, collaboration, initiative and self-advocacy, and organization
- Work with Instructional Coaches in ongoing cycles in order to direct and target instruction for continuous improvement
- Implement methodologies and practices that lead to high and continuous student engagement and achievement, in collaboration with the Chief Academic Officer and the Instructional Leadership Team, giving constant and specific constructive feedback to students
- Solicit and utilize student feedback effectively for improvement of classroom practices, and meet regularly with students to review their progress
- Review, acknowledge, engage in reflective conversations, and sign all forms in Teachboost, the school’s feedback platform
- Complete reports on attendance, student progress, and other documentation as required by the administration
- Submit standards-based quality planning documents on time-- syllabus, weekly lesson plans and scope and sequence
- Plan responsibly for absences to ensure students continue to learn by submitting either a Planned Absence Lesson Plan (PALP) or an Emergency Lesson Plan (ELP)
