Commercial Underwriter

**THE OPPORTUNITY**:
This position evaluates new and renewal commercial risks for Middle Market accounts, defined as $75,000 - $500,000 in premium size. The underwriter will review submissions from independent agency partners, then decide to accept or deny coverage and negotiate terms/conditions. The overall objective is to meet or exceed company defined loss ratio, retention, growth, and production objectives. This position will also develop relationships with agency partners and producers in order to assist with production. This position must have knowledge of forms, coverages, underwriting guidelines and various other insurance concepts. The Middle Market underwriter serves as a vital link between Harford Mutual personnel, independent agencies, and vendors through periodic visits (20-25% travel required).

Hybrid - Bel Air, MD or Fort Mill, SC

**WHAT YOU’LL DO**:

- Analyze, price, bind, and document new business accounts within framework of company underwriting guidelines.
- Evaluate renewal accounts by reviewing loss experience, inspections, and various other data to determine if the account should be non-renewed, renewed, or modified.
- Develop and maintain sound working relationships with independent agency plant via online and in-person visitation.
- Utilize various rate monitoring and analytical tools to analyze and report on trends and development within your book of business
- Provide training, guidance, and counseling to commercial business service staff.
- Perform other duties or special projects as required or as assigned by a supervisor.

**WHAT YOU’LL BRING**:

- Bachelor's degree (Risk Management & Insurance degree preferred)
- Minimum of 3 years of commercial lines underwriting and/or marketing experience, preferably with a background in construction and/or property underwriting.
- Completion or participation in AU or CPCU program
- Excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to multi-task, exercise sound judgement, and meet frequent account deadlines
