**SUMMARY**:

The essential skill for this position is the interpersonal dexterity to work side-by-side with classroom teachers, with instructional coaches, and with administrators. It requires specific skills in building relationships and establishing trust, interpersonal communication, adaptability in situational roles, and effective leadership. The duties and responsibilities listed below are examples of the types of opportunities to work side-by-side with our high school faculty and as a coordinator in the Office of Instructional Services.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- **Foster collaboration and professional development**: Foster a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration by sharing the latest educational research and best practices, and leading professional development for coaches, principals, and teachers to enhance their full range of professional skills.
- **Lead new teacher program**: With support from past leaders and current mentor teachers, lead Howell’s New Teacher Induction program for 30-50 teachers in their first 3 years of teaching.
- **Support Curriculum Cycle**: Collaborate with department heads and instructional liaisons within each department to align curriculum with priority standards and the district’s Portrait of a Highlander. Support the liaisons and the HS School Improvement Team to develop specific proposals within the 5 year curriculum cycle.
- **Instructional best practices**: Utilize your expertise in evidence-based instructional practices and instructional coaching skills to improve classroom instruction through teacher labs, professional development, modeling, and coaching.
- **Literacy Assessment**: Support teachers in analyzing student literacy achievement data to define flexible groups, design intervention strategies, and monitor progress. Work collaboratively with the existing HS math intervention teachers, the MS Instructional Support Coordinator, and the other instructional coaches to design improvements to assessment and intervention practices at the high school.
- Maintain regular predictable attendance.
- Other duties as assigned.

**QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS**

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**:

- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field required.
- Master’s degree in educational leadership or curriculum and instruction preferred.
- Possession of a valid Michigan teaching certificate required.
- Five (5) years of successful teaching experience required, at the high school level preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in educational leadership (instructional coach, curriculum coordinator, assessment consultant, or similar position) preferred.
- Demonstration of leadership ability in past teaching, administrative assignments and/or building/District level committee work.

**PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING**:

- Training in assessment literacy, formative assessment, prioritizing and assessing standards, measuring student growth, selecting appropriate assessments, and developing balanced assessment systems.
- Training in literacy instruction and Michigan’s Essential Practices in Disciplinary Literacy.
- Training in research-based instructional coaching practices such as Coaching 101, Cognitive Coaching, Essential Coaching Practices for Early Literacy, Critical Friends Group, Liberating Structures, etc.
- Training in District instructional initiatives such as 5D+, Capturing Kids Hearts, Instructional Rounds, Differentiated Instruction, Explicit Instruction, NGSX, PBIS, Reaching Higher, Reading Apprenticeship, Reader’s Workshop, SIOP, SOEL, START, etc.
- Experience in district or building instructional leadership positions such as mentor teacher, instructional liaison, school improvement, curriculum development, assessment development, data team leader, design team, etc.
- Experience leading / facilitating professional development sessions for teachers at the district or building level
