Job Standards and Performance Expectations
1. Tumor Conference
a. Ensures that weekly tumor conferences are held in compliance with Commission on Cancer standard 2.5 and that all required elements are included in case presentations.
b. Works collaboratively with staff from pathology and radiology departments to provide relevant slides and images to be presented at conference.
c. Maintains frequent communication with physicians to ensure that all needed material is available at conference. Ensures continuity of care by notifying all physicians involved in the management of care of patient's being presented at conference.
d. Attends multiple weekly tumor conferences in-person to perform room set-up and assist physicians as needed.
2. Abstracting, Coding, Staging
a. Performs high quality concurrent/retrospective abstraction of core information from patient medical records (including demographic characteristics, history of symptoms, diagnostic procedures, laboratory values, complete treatment information and other medical conditions) and enters essential information from the medical record to the OLOLRMC cancer registry database.
b. Accurately assigns coding and staging information including diagnoses and procedures using SEER, NAACCR, IDC-10, and ACoS STORE guidelines. Determines the appropriate sequencing of diseases, diagnoses, and treatment (including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy). Utilizes critical thinking and analytical skills to assign accurate information pertaining to primary site, histology, EOD, Summary Stage, SSDIs, and AJCC Staging.
c. Takes initiative for understanding NCCN guidelines and will contact outside facilities as necessary to ensure that complete treatment information is recorded.
d. Maintains patient confidentiality including confidentiality of sensitive hospital performance improvement information.
e. Ability to analyze and process detail-oriented information
3. Case finding
a. Thoroughly screens pathology reports from the Case Alert System (CAS) to identify all patients diagnosed and/or treated with a reportable cancer diagnosis.
b. Effectively utilizes the Solid Tumor Rules Manual and the Hematopoietic Database and Manual to determine reportability and accurately assign the primary site code for reportable primaries.
4. Other Duties As Assigned
a. Maintains continuing education as required by the ACoS CoC.
b. Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
b. Participates in monthly NAACCR webinars and other education as required by LTR.
Experience
- 2 years experience in Cancer Registry or medical field.
Education
- Associate's degree or the equivalent (60 college credits).
Training
- Successful completion of the SEER*Educate course is required within the first six months of employment.
Licensure
- Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) preferred; or
- Eligibility requirements met as outlined by the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) to sit for the ODS credentialing exam within 2 years of employment.
