Overview:
Provides for security of student, patients, visitors, staff and property by patrolling assigned areas, maintaining visitor control and investigating irregularities; provides information and assistance to students, patients, visitors, and staff; Trains new Campus Police/Public Safety staff as assigned. In the absence of the Lieutenant (shift supervisor), provides leadership for the assigned staff.

**Responsibilities**:

- **This position is “safety sensitive” in that the Police Sergeant performs duties directly impacting the safety of themselves and others, has access to confidential information, operates motor vehicles, and carries defensive weapons**.**
- Assists the shift Lieutenant in the daily operations of the squad and performs a variety of police duties related to safety, security, crime prevention and detection, enforcement of laws, codes, and policies.
- Adjusts schedules and approves leave requests to ensure sufficient staffing is maintained
- Checks reports and other paperwork submitted by subordinates for completeness and accuracy
- Checks patrol equipment to ensure proper maintenance and functionality and reports damaged or malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate party
- Performs routine patrols of the campus buildings and grounds
- Answers all calls for service in a timely manner
- Is knowledgeable of the campus layout
- Provides motor vehicle assistance (jump start, unlock vehicle, air, etc.) to when requested
- Assists local, state, and federal law enforcement as appropriate
- Detects security concerns such as suspicious individuals, vehicles, and/or situations and handles concerns appropriately
- Conducts or ensures campus escorts are handled in a timely manner.
- Responds to emergency calls in a prompt and professional manner
- Follows all emergency procedures as directed.
- Appropriately takes control of situations to ensure the safety and security of the scene
- Demonstrates the ability to properly investigate minor criminal complaints and accidents within EVMS jurisdiction
- Maintains a working knowledge of EVMS Police and Public Safety’s Mutual Aid and Concurrent Jurisdiction agreement with the City of Norfolk and EVMS Police and Public Safety’s contractual agreement with CHKD
- Is knowledgeable of HIPPA regulations and the responsibility of EVMS Police and Public Safety personnel
- Possesses the ability to handle required court appearances appropriately
- Perform other lawful, ethical, and appropriate duties as assigned
- Models the EVMS and Public Safety values regarding friendliness, approachability, and exceeding the customers’ expectations

Qualifications:

- High School diploma or equivalent plus five (5) years’ experience as a sworn law enforcement officer is required.
- Associate’s Degree or higher in Police Science, Criminal Justice, or related fields preferred.
- Advanced training in supervision and/or Leadership preferred.
- At least one year as a police officer with EVMS preferred.
- Supervisory experience in law enforcement preferred.
- Virginia DCJS LEO certification required.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Must pass criminal background check for VCIN/NCIC certification
