**The Organization**:
**Pool Lifeguard II**

The mission of Coronado Recreation and Golf Services is to promote community, health, and safety while building a culture of excellence. Recreation and Golf Services offer a wide variety of programs and services for all ages and throughout the community. Our staff strives to provide excellent customer service while enhancing the health and fitness of all guests who use our facilities.
- The City of Coronado will cover the costs of training for employees to obtain and maintain the required certifications for the Pool Lifeguard II position._
- This is a part-time, temporary (not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year) position that does not include benefits._

**The Position**:
Under general supervision, to ensure the safety of swimmers and enforce regulations; to observe and supervise the activities of patrons in the pool and surrounding area; to protect life, prevent accidents and rescue swimmers in emergency situations; to prepare lesson plans and assist or conduct instructional swimming or water safety classes for children and adults; to assist in the maintenance of facilities and equipment; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. May lead the work of subordinate lifeguards.

The following tasks are typical for positions in these classifications. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

**Pool Lifeguard I**:
1. Observe and supervise activities of swimmers in the pool and the surrounding area; ensure safety of area; enforce applicable pool rules and regulations.
2. Rescue persons in distress or in danger of drowning; provide emergency care as necessary including but not limited to first aid and CPR.
3. Participate in facilities clean-up and maintenance; test and monitor water chemistry and temperature; inspect pool facilities and report any unsafe conditions.
4. Respond to questions and inquiries from the public regarding pool regulations, use of facilities and various aquatic programs offered.
5. Maintain records, reports and logs.
6. Open and close pool and related facilities.
7. Assist in preparing for special events and competitions.
8. May assist in providing swimming instruction.
9. Attend in-service trainings.
10. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

**Pool Lifeguard II- in addition to the above essential job functions**:
1. Prepare lesson plans and conduct swimming and water safety classes; instruct students in proper swimming techniques and various water safety measures.
2. Review swimming techniques of students; provide additional training as necessary; ensure adherence to proper safety precautions.
3. Assist and participate in the implementation of aquatic programs.

**Minimum Requirements**:

- Lifeguarding License and Certifications are not a prerequisite to apply. All applicants must successfully complete a nationally certified training program to obtain a Lifeguard License and the following Certifications (CPR/AED and First Aid) prior to aquatic work assignments. Training and licensing will be provided after hire.

**Pool Lifeguard II**

**Experience**:

- One year (1) of lifeguarding or swimming instruction experience is desirable, but not required.

**Education/Training**:

- Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, supplemented by specialized training in lifeguarding, water safety or a related field.

**Licenses and Certificates**:

- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid First Aid certificate.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Lifeguard Training certificate.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Water Safety Instructor certificate.
- Possession of a valid Waterfront Lifeguard Certification is desirable.

**Knowledge of**:

- Principles and practices of swimming, lifeguarding and water safety.
- Methods and techniques of first aid, CPR and AED.
- Methods and techniques of swimming instruction.
- Basic operations, services and activities of a public swimming facility including water chemistry and maintenance functions.
- Principles and practices of public relations.
- Appropriate safety precautions and procedures within the area of assignment. Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.

**Ability to**:

- Perform lifeguarding duties including water rescues.
