Laborer-solid Waste

We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking individual to join our Public Works Department as a member of the solid waste team. In this role, you will be responsible for riding on the back of a garbage truck, collecting and disposing of refuse and recycling from designated routes. Your primary focus will be to ensure efficient and timely waste removal while maintaining a commitment to safety and environmental responsibility.

**Position Summary** - The Solid Waste Laborer provides semi-skilled and manual labor for the Public Works Department within the Solid Waste Division. Collects residential refuse throughout the City using a large commercial truck (over 26,000 pounds GVWR) as part of a two-person collection crew and safely loading waste and carrying bags and containers to the vehicle for disposal. Assists Driver in providing prompt, courteous, and complete waste removal services for customers who reside on a designated residential route. Clean, maintain and perform minor repairs on issued truck.

Pay Range is $16.00 to $21.81 per hour

**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**:

- Ride on the back of a garbage truck during scheduled routes.
- Collect and load residential and commercial waste into the truck for proper disposal.
- Operate packing mechanism and various levers and handles to activate the lifting and loading mechanism.
- Clean waste from the packer blade and truck body on each disposal trip; spray and clean the hopper and truck, if applicable.
- Perform complete pre
- and post-operation inspection of the vehicle in accordance with department policy; report any safety issues on standard reports.
- Courteously interact with all customers, dispatchers and others on a daily basis to ensure all customer routes are serviced in a timely and professional manner.
- Continuously monitor waste for evidence of unacceptable waste.
- Clean area around an accidental waste spill, ensuring adherence to all applicable safety standards and policies.
- Maintain adherence to required productivity standards for the department to ensure all customers are serviced in a timely and efficient manner.
- Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with residents or businesses during the collection process.
- Follow all required safety policies and procedures.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

**REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
- Physical ability to lift and carry heavy objects repeatedly.
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to follow safety protocols and guidelines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of the following pre-employment checks:

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- High school diploma or equivalent GED
- Texas Class B or Class A (CDL) license
- Ability to fluently speak Spanish or other foreign language as a secondary language
