The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the USFS, is recruiting 1 GIS Technician to perform data management, geospatial analysis, and cartographic and map design and production projects within the USFS Region 5 Eldorado National Forest (Placerville Ranger District) in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. These projects all serve the Basin & Range Forestry program’s greater mission of helping the USFS in their critical goal of improving forest resilience in the face of worsening climate conditions and increased wildfire threats. The work that you will do directly improves the quality of these forests helping ensure they continue to thrive for generations to come.

Tasks under this project shall include:

- GIS Project Support including Data Management
- Use USFS corporate Geographic Information System Esri technology (ArcGIS 10.8.2; ArcGIS Pro 3.2 or newer)
- Requires the use of USFS corporate and other agency Geographic Information System data to perform GIS analysis and produce maps for USFS projects.
- Data capture, data attributing, editing, plotting, and reporting as required.
- Completes and updates metadata records for GIS projects.
- Collects geospatial and resource data using manual and technology assisted methods including GPS and mobile computing technology.
- Incorporates field collected and remote sensing data into corporate geospatial data sets using established procedures.
- Updates geospatial data sets for multiple disciplines including recreation, silviculture, wildlife, hydrology, engineering, fire, etc.
- Updates existing Python scripts.
- Geospatial Analysis
- Uses standard operations and scripted processes to manipulate and analyze geospatial data to support multi-resource analysis in support of planning for a variety of projects, including fire recovery and fire restoration.
- Cartographic and Map Design/Production
- Uses GIS software and cartographic tools to create simple thematic and reference maps, following appropriate standards.
- Reads and understands metadata to determine appropriate use.
- Uses and understands project map templates
- Training
- Conducts informal training and provides technical assistance to GIS software users in the development, storage, retrieval, and analysis of data.

The Intern shall be responsible for safeguarding all Government equipment, information and property provided for intern’s use. At the close of each work period, equipment and materials shall be secured.

The Government will provide on-site computer equipment, supplies, and other GFP such as GPS equipment, and office space for Intern support. In the event telework or travel is required, the Intern shall take all steps to safeguard any GFP in its possession.

Contract Timeline:It is estimated that this project will require 1,900 hours. All task deliverables shall be completed in a timely manner to meet project deadlines.

The Intern is responsible for conducting business, between the hours of 0600-1800 Monday thru Friday except Federal holidays or when the Government facility is closed due to local or national emergencies, administrative closings, or similar Government directed facility closings.
Location:The Intern’s primary work location will be at the Eldorado National Forest Supervisor’s Headquarters in Placerville, CA. Secondary workplaces may occur at other locations.

Eldorado National Forest (NF); Placerville and Pacific/Georgetown Ranger Districts
Located in the central Sierra Nevada, the Eldorado NF is bordered on the east by the Lake Tahoe Basin and the Humboldt-Toiyabe NF, and by the Tahoe and Stanislaus NFs to the north and south, respectively. Eldorado NF offers an abundance of outdoor activities including fishing, boating, hiking, biking, skiing and climbing. The forest is home to much of the American River headwaters and the stunning Desolation Wilderness, and is in the heart of California’s historic Gold Country. People travel to Eldorado National Forest for its rich prospecting history, diversity of outdoor adventure and even beautiful vineyards.
Compensation and Benefits:

- Wage: $29/hour
- Health, dental, vision Insurance premiums covered 100% by GBI; health, dental and vision insurance is available on the first day of the month following the start of employment

Job Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree
- Demonstrate
- ArcGIS 10.8.2
- ArcGIS Pro 3.2x or newer
- ArcGIS Online
- Capture data, analyze data, manage data, create maps
- Knowledge of ArcGIS Survey123 and Field Maps is preferred
- Ability to work with a variety of personnel encompassing many fields of expertise.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally.

In addition to the skills required for the position, it is desirable that proposed personnel also have the following skills:

- Some experience using Adobe Acrobat Pro
- Some experience with Python
- Knowledge of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act
