**Director of Government Affairs**

Under the direction of executive management, leads the government relations functions of UCAN. In consultation with the vice president of Marketing and External Affairs, CEO and senior leaders, plans and executes a comprehensive, proactive government affairs strategy that advances UCAN’s mission and goals with local, regional, state and federal elected officials. Serves as a principal liaison to elected officials at all levels.

**Responsibilities**:

- In collaboration with senior leadership and other stakeholder staff, develops and manages UCAN’s strategy for strengthening relationships with elected officials and government agencies and increasing their understanding of and support for UCAN.
- Works with senior leadership to identify priority legislative and government relations issues.
- Communicates and advocates UCAN priorities to local, regional, state and national elected officials and staff.
- Develops supporters and political alliances with the community to advocate on behalf of UCAN, including but is not limited to peers, partners and community-based organizations. Organizes and collaborates with partners to lobby around specific legislation, including political organizing.
- Monitors legislation and policy activities, updates and advises senior leadership and staff about relevant policy proposals and actions; works with staff to analyze potential impact on UCAN. Communicates with UCAN to inform of relevant government issues.
- Coordinates government relations strategy with other relevant stakeholders, including UCAN lobbyists, constituents, state and national associations and government relations staff from other agencies. Engages constituents inside and outside of UCAN in support of the agency’s government relations agenda, including travel to state capital and other destinations.
- Develops materials in support of UCAN’s government relations agenda: talking points, legislative summaries, fact sheets, testimony, reports and letters. Works with Marketing and External Affairs and Development teams to develop relevant public relations materials, fundraising collateral as needed and social media content.
- Collaborates with Marketing and External Affairs team and senior leadership to implement events and other activities to support UCAN’s government relations goals, such as town halls, press conferences, campus visits, and virtual and in-person meetings.
- Plans budget for government relations activities within the Marketing and External Affairs budget.
- Advocates for UCAN programs that are impacted by local policy and municipal budgets, among other influences.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work is generally performed in an office environment with likely interruptions and irregularities in the work schedule. In-district and state travel is required. Working hours may vary and occasional evening and weekend work is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in political science, public affairs, public relations, communications or related field. Relevant experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis. Five years of responsible, professional experience in government relations required. Valid driver’s license required.
