The purpose of this position is to assist veterinarians with patient care and treatment, monitor hospitalized pets, maintain inventory, prepare prescriptions, perform routine in-house lab work, educate clients regarding veterinary care and procedures and assist with surgical procedures. Operates under the direct supervision of the Practice Manager.

MAJOR DUTIES
- Communicate with clients regarding the medical status of their pet. Provide accurate information to clients concerning fees, hospital policies, etc. Promote the hospital website and pet portals to all clients.
- Demonstrate warmth, courtesy and professionalism in all interactions with clients.
- Restrain patients in a safe, efficient and compassionate manner during examinations and procedures.
- Assist with moving patients throughout the hospital. Cage and remove patients as needed.
- Exercise compassion and care in all interactions with patients. Know how to properly handle difficult or contentious patients.
- Follow established procedures in order to assist veterinarians with examinations and facilitate the flow of clients and patients during outpatient appointments. Consult with veterinarians on a daily basis to plan each day’s activities. Keep doctors apprised of potential problems, discussions with clients, etc.
- Review medical records and notes made by the receptionist in order to discern the nature of the visit and any tests or procedures that may be needed. Prepare vaccinations and medications as needed for appointments.
- Greet clients, weigh patients when checking in, and escort them into an exam room.
- Obtain any lab samples that may be needed from the pet, such as urine and fecal samples. Anticipate and prepare any medications or vaccines the doctor will need to treat the patient.
- Notify the veterinarian when patients in the exam room are ready to be seen. Assist the veterinarian within the exam room by restraining the patient, preparing forms, obtaining instruments, etc.
- Perform any lab work that may be needed or make sure that lab work is performed by another healthcare team member while the patient is still in the exam room, such as Heartworm and FELV/FIV tests.
- Ensure all procedures are highlighted on the travel sheet and entered correctly into Avimark before checking the client out in the room and collecting payment. Schedule follow-up appointments as needed, preferably before the client leaves the appointment.
- Prepare the exam room for the next visit.
- Accurately perform routine in-house laboratory procedures. Appropriately prepare and handle specimens, such as fecal samples and urine samples.
- Aid technicians and doctors with administering medications or medical procedures.
- Provide support to surgical technicians as needed. Assist technicians with preparing patients for surgery. Be prepared to run and troubleshoot i.v. pumps as needed.
- Walk hospitalized patients; feed and help medicate hospitalized patients.
- Help cover the reception desk when needed by answering phones, helping clients, etc.; assist clients to their cars when needed.
- Give clients handouts and educational materials to take home to further their understanding of veterinary issues.
- Accurately dispense prescription medications per the veterinarian’s instructions. Prepare prescription labels and appropriately package medications.
- Ensure that medications are added to the patient’s record and appropriately charged to the client.
- Follow established hospital safety guidelines regarding radiographs, controlled drugs, animal handling, etc.
- Communicate with clients via telephone about negative fecal test results, New Patient Callbacks, etc.
- Clean and straighten exam rooms, treatment and lab areas. Clean kennel cages as well as surgery, prep, and treatment rooms as needed. Restock exam rooms with supplies as needed. Assist other staff members to keep the public areas of the practice clean and well maintained.
- Be sure to have laundry cleaned, folded, and put away.
- Help clean and close the hospital at night. This includes vacuuming, mopping, and other necessary cleaning tasks before leaving the hospital. Clean and maintain all medical equipment as required. Stock hospital and cleaning supplies as needed.
- Check in and put food orders away; perform weekly food inventory; perform weekly inventory of medications, supplies, etc.
- Exercise appropriate veterinary medical knowledge. Utilize in-house educational materials and also participate in continuing education provided by the hospital, either online or off-site.
