Equipment Operator

**Location**: Bern Township, Reading, PA

Bern Township’s Road Department is expanding, and we’re thrilled to welcome a new **Equipment Operator** to our team. This role supports a variety of public works projects within the township, ensuring our community’s infrastructure is safe and well-maintained.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Transport equipment, tools, and construction materials to work sites, load and unload materials and tools from trucks.
- Respond promptly to inclement weather events and emergencies, operating snowplow and salting machinery as needed.
- Operate equipment to sweep streets, trim trees from elevated positions, and remove debris from roadways.
- Conduct routine road maintenance, including paving, roller compaction, patching road surfaces, and painting line markings.
- Perform routine vehicle maintenance such as lubrication, oil changes, and parts repairs; assist mechanics with major equipment repairs.
- Operate heavy construction equipment and perform manual labor on assigned projects when not driving.
- Engage in storm water maintenance, park maintenance duties, and repair of township building facilities.
- Respond to after-hours callouts for winter operations, blocked roadways, or emergencies.
- Monitor work environment for safety hazards and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Partner with outside contractors, ensuring adherence to project specifications and regulations.

**Qualifications**:

- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Valid CDL driver’s license (Class A preferred) for operation in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
- At least 1 year of experience operating trucks, construction equipment, and/or snowplow operations, or an equivalent combination of related experience and training.
- Knowledge of proper operating procedures and safety practices for trucks and construction equipment.
- Ability to recognize and address defective operation of trucks/equipment and perform routine maintenance.
- Familiarity with state laws regarding the operation of motor vehicles on highways.
- Physical strength to lift heavy objects, work on elevated positions, and endure adverse weather conditions.
- Availability to work off-hours/weekends and respond quickly to emergency callouts.

**Salary & Benefits**:

- Starting at $26.16/hr., increasing after 90 days
- Paid Holidays: 10 holidays
