**DESCRIPTION**:
UC San Diego Health is a Magnet designated organization, which is a prestigious recognition that applies to only 10% of all U.S. hospitals. UC San Diego Health has held its Magnet status since 2011.
Under direction, the Nurse Practitioner provides clinically expert triage service for the Hillcrest Subspecialty Surgery (HSS) inpatient service, including surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, breast surgery, and mínimally invasive surgery. Participates in the care and assessment of inpatients on the service as well as consult patients. Communicates assessments to the attending and resident surgeons. Serves as liaison between patients, nursing staff, and physicians, assessing and determining the acuity of patient symptoms and communicating these to the physicians as appropriate. Assesses inpatients and emergency department patients to determine and expedite disposition. Assists physicians as required; conveys instructions and lab results to patients, providing health education as needed. Prioritizes and resolves patient issues, involving physicians as appropriate. Manages and documents all communications in the electronic medical record system. Plans, implements, and evaluates health care treatments for inpatients. Direct supervision will occur by assigned Attending Surgeons. The position requires a strong emphasis on the complete care of the surgical patient, from peri-operative care to discharge. This position requires excellent communication and time management skills.
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**:
- Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.
- California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification.
- ** Current Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (NP) Certification (AGACNP or ACNP).**
- BART or BLS at time of hire with commitment to get UCSD BART within 6 months of hire date.
- ** Minimum one year of recent work experience as inpatient RN or NP working with postoperative patients.**
- Working knowledge of inpatient services with recent direct patient care experience.
- Proficiency in complete care of the surgical patient, from peri
- to post-op settings.
- Ability to perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.
- Ability to maintain detailed medical information in an organized and easily retrievable manner. Knowledge necessary for instructing housestaff, medical students, physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel in all aspects of surgical care.
- Knowledge of all types of treatment and modalities necessary for the patients care and well-being.
- Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data in a meaningful manner.
- Ability to properly counsel patients and families, particularly in delicate or death and dying situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in-charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team.
- Ability to write orders regarding execution of inpatient plans of treatment.
- Ability to assess the daily status and progress of patients and report this effectively to the physician in-charge and other medical care personnel associated with the patient.
- Knowledge of all types of treatment and modalities necessary for the patients care and well-being and the skill in recording nursing/medical assessment findings accurately and completely.
