**JOB CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY**

Positions assigned to this class are responsible for performing skilled technical work in the construction, installation, operation, and maintenance of the Town’s traffic signal system.

**ESSENTIAL DUTIES**
- The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks will vary over time depending on the Town’s needs._
- Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains electronic traffic signal control devices, systems and related equipment, including communication lines, utility connections, video systems, railroad, and emergency vehicle pre-emption.
- Programs traffic signal controllers.
- Participates in the construction, installation, and maintenance of traffic signals, electronic traffic control devices and street lighting systems.
- Performs routine preventive maintenance checks at signalized intersections including testing equipment in the signal control cabinet for proper operation and time setting; tests and records voltage and current usage; checks field equipment for proper head alignment, pole plumbness, missing material or visible damage.
- Participates in the operations of a personal computer based, networked traffic signal coordination system.
- Maintains inventory system.
- Coordinates new installations with appropriate utilities; ensures proper location of utilities and other work hazards prior to digging.
- Reviews electrical and construction plans for traffic signals and street lights; inspects all phases of construction; interprets plans and work orders to determine and confirm proper placement of traffic signals and street lights.
- Assists with the organization and scheduling of projects pertaining to traffic control and other traffic signal problems.
- Performs inspections on construction of traffic signals and highway striping and signing at traffic signals.
- Maintains records of maintenance and construction reports of traffic signals.
- Prepares reports and maintains time, material, and equipment used records; requisitions supplies and materials.
- Participates in emergency situations; coordinates emergency and special assignments with other internal departments and outside agencies and organizations.
- Performs related work as assigned.

**Typical Qualifications**:
**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS** (at job entry)
- Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and 3 years of experience in traffic signal maintenance or operations, engineering, construction, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience.

**LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS**
- Driver's License;
- Maintain all certifications/licenses required at job entry.

**KNOWLEDGE**
- Methods, materials, tools, and standard practice for the installation, operation, and maintenance of electrical equipment, devices or systems;
- Operation, maintenance, and repair of electronic, solid state, digital, analog, and other electro-mechanical devices and equipment related to or of similar complexity to traffic signal and control systems;
- Traffic control regulations, practices and safety requirements;
- Equipment, tools and materials relevant to area of assignment;
- Occupational hazards and safe working practices;
- Applicable Federal, state and county OSHA regulations;
- Standard office equipment including the computer and programs relevant to the performance of applicable duties and responsibilities.

**SKILLS**
- Reading and interpreting technical and operational documents, blueprints, and diagrams;
- Operating testing and monitoring equipment used in traffic signal installation and maintenance;
- Operating a motor vehicle, including heavy trucks and a lift truck;
- Preparing written reports;
- Maintaining records;
- Estimating time and material requirements of work projects;
- Using applicable hand and power tools and equipment related to area of assignment;
- Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and other interested parties sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
