10 month**General Summary**: An ideal Upper School English teacher is dynamic, caring, and intellectual, and able to teach a wide variety of literature to all ages and levels of students. The teacher will work with students in grades 9 - 12.**Essential Functions**:

- Teaching and Curriculum Development
- Inspire, engage, and encourage students in the study of English
- Value, promote, and develop the importance of effort and grit in students’ academic achievement; celebrating students’ effort and their incremental increases in achievement
- Working in a student-centered learning environment
- Interdisciplinary and Intradisciplinary Collaboration
- Work closely with colleagues teaching the same courses to ensure the same content coverage and ensure similar student experiences
- Become an active member of the McDonogh community by participating in school activities inside and outside of the English department
- Professional Growth and Contributions
- Mentor a small group of students as an advisor in an advisory program as well as students inside the English classroom
- Overtly support and act in accordance with the school's mission
- Exhibit professional standards of presentation, punctuality, professional courtesy, and discretion
- Respond to the needs of the School, including but not limited to, service learning, advisory programs, coaching, assigned supervision, and other areas as determined by the Head of the Upper School
- Use professional growth opportunities to continually grow as an English educator, including but not limited to, observing classes taught by colleagues both within and outside of the English department

**Recommended Employment Qualifications**:
Experience in student publication and/or journalism would help address current departmental needs. Master’s Degree (preferred, but not required).

**Additional Experience**:

- Experience teaching in a neurodiverse environment (preferred, but not required)
- Prior experience teaching english is preferred

- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and discretion
- Ability to successfully work with and within a culturally diverse student body, staff, and community
- Exhibits a strong work ethic
- Must be able to comply with background check, including finger prints, as required by the agency and / or state regulations.
- Must possess personal qualifications such as flexibility, patience, good personal hygiene, and physical and mental health that do not interfere with responsibilities

**Working Conditions**:
Lifting and carrying of equipment is not typical, but may be required on rare occasions. Lifting up to 25 pounds. Other working conditions include climbing stairs, walking around campus, sitting, standing, and significant computer use including extensive close use of a computer monitor. Reaching, grasping.
