Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is seeking a highly proactive individual to serve as health educator in the Healthcare Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance (HAI/AR) Program. Plans, organizes, and conducts health communication activities to prevent HAI/AR. Implements HAI/AR prevention collaboratives and campaigns. Develops and disseminates HAI/AR educational materials for healthcare and lay audiences. Provides expertise in health communication best practices. Participates in grant writing and reporting.

Job Responsibilities

1. Plans, conducts, and evaluates health communication and educational initiatives related to preventing healthcare associated infections and antimicrobial resistance (HAI/AR).
- Recruits healthcare facilities and participants for HAI/AR initiatives.
- Designs and conducts learning needs assessments and reviews other data to develop overall strategy to meet learning needs of Illinois healthcare facilities and the public.
- Organizes logistics for educational programs, including promotional materials, publicity, speaker recruitment, continuing education credits, registration, and virtual or onsite arrangements.
- Travels to deliver in-person and remote presentations on HAI/AR topics targeting healthcare and lay audiences.
- Collaborates with IDPH staff to monitor effectiveness of health communication activities.
- Tracks, analyzes, and reports on key milestones.

2. Develops and disseminates educational materials and resources on HAI/AR for healthcare personnel and lay audiences.
- Maintains up-to-date HAI/AR information on IDPH website for different audiences.
- Develops evidence-based healthcare facility toolkits and other resources based on audience engagement best practices.
- Coordinates content development and logistics for eLearning platforms.
- Monitors uptake of educational resources and makes and implements plans for improvements.

3. Implements HAI/AR prevention collaboratives and campaigns.
- Applies quality improvement methodology and best practices to engage cohorts of healthcare facilities in quality improvement collaboratives, including travel to meet with participating facilities individually and as a group.
- Collaborates with staff to evaluate HAI/AR prevention collaboratives and campaigns.
- Participates in implementation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Project Firstline to promote foundational understanding of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) among healthcare workers across the spectrum of healthcare delivery.

4. Provides expertise in health communication best practices.
- Provides consultation and technical assistance to HAI/AR program staff, regional staff, local health departments and others on design and implementation of effective health communication interventions to reduce HAI/AR.
- Conducts staff training related to HAI/AR risk communication.
- Identifies, recommends, and implements information technology and social media tools to strengthen health communication activities.

5. Develops relationships and collaborates with stakeholders to advance program goals.
- Identifies and engages with key stakeholder groups.
- Coordinates stakeholder workgroups, committees, and task forces as assigned.
- Presents about program activities at stakeholder meetings and conferences.
- Creates workplans for infection prevention activities.
- Develops performance reports in line with program priorities and federal grant requirements.

7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications
- Requires a master’s degree in public health education or related area or requires certification as a certified health education specialist by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing.
- Requires one-year professional experience in public health education or related field.
