CHILD SUPPORT PARALEGAL

Under the direction of the Administrative Director, the Child Support Paralegal locates absent parents, establishes paternities, establishes support orders and enforces current support orders through administrative process or court proceedings. This position is covered under the Prosecuting Attorney’s Personnel Handbook. This is an employee-at-will position.

**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**:

- Assists Deputy Prosecutors as directed including follow-up, preparing status reports, pay histories, computing arrearages, initiating wage assignments and processing postal and employment verifications.
- Maintains tax and lottery intercept lists, credit bureau histories and parent locator requests. Prepares cases for court hearings, organizes files, updates arrearages and prepares forms needed in court. Assists the attorney in the court room.
- Establishes and/or enforces support orders as directed. Files contempts, modifications, agreed entries and other legal documents with the Court. Activates income withholding orders and monitors orders as directed.
- Reviews child support arrearages, pulling pay histories and orders, making sure credit is given for all payments, including tax hits, direct payment made to custodial parent and payments from other states and prepares current calculations. Resolves disputes concerning federal and state tax returns when arrearages are owed and requests refunds when necessary.
- Interviews IV-D custodial parents to obtain necessary case information. Conducts investigations, gathers, verifies and maintains communication with other counties, states, and countries to request and provide case-related information required to establish and/or enforce child support orders.
- Investigates cases for possible inheritance or insurance settlements and places liens on vehicles and properties to collect past due child support. Initiates driver’s license or professional license suspensions on non-paying cases which meet legal guidelines.
- Contacts custodial parents to relay case information. Obtains signatures and provides instructions on court appearances. Files legal documents with the court.
- Answers multiple phone lines and interacts with custodial and non-custodial parents. Researches their questions and explains procedures and regulations. Interacts with law enforcement agencies, federal and state agencies, attorneys and employers.
- Reviews files and reports for data reliability and identifies what action to take. Maintains daily operations and assures continuous processing of enforcement cases by using standard forms and procedures. Meets with supervisor throughout the day.
- Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.

**REQUIREMENTS**:

- High School Diploma or GED with Specialized Training in Paralegal, Criminal Justice, Law or related field and one year experience working in an office environment with multi-line telephones and computer experience
- Knowledge of Indiana State Enforcement Tracking System as used for data on case loads
- Knowledge of Indiana Client Eligibility System to acquire client information

- Knowledge of Indiana Child Support Guidelines to prepare a worksheet to establish or modify a support order
- Ability to access client pay history, performing calculations and computer program payment history to determine the arrearage balance due on a case
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong computer skills with the ability to use Microsoft Office and other job related computer software
- Ability to type at least 50 WPM

**DIFFICULTY OF WORK**:
**RESPONSIBILITY**:
The Child Support Paralegal performs a variety of tasks when interviewing custodial parents to obtain necessary case information. Errors in work are revealed through adverse effects.

**PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS**:
The Child Support Paralegal maintains frequent contact with other County employees, law enforcement agencies, federal and state agencies, attorneys and employers regarding child support cases.

**WORKING CONDITIONS**:
The Child Support Paralegal works in a standard office environment with the ability to move around freely with frequent sitting requiring the ability to perform some lifting up to twenty pounds, some bending and pushing and/or pulling loads. The Child Support Paralegal requires very frequent typing including transcription and proofreading and attention to detail and monitoring of equipment.
