**WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER**:
The Little Calumet River Crew Leader leads work in restoring and maintaining natural areas and riverine wetlands as part of a Little Calumet River Restoration Team. They will also lead a multi-organizational crew as they control exotic invasive species; monitor wildlife; conduct preserve maintenance; do maintenance of water control structures; and prepare sites for prescribed burns. The Crew Leader will help maintain restoration records using a database, PC, and/or tablet; ensure safe use and maintenance of tools and equipment; and may assist with volunteer and community events.

Responsibilities & Scope:

- May supervise seasonal staff and/or monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers.
- Networks with diverse groups, including landowners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the public to recruit support for the Conservancy and publicize Conservancy programs/preserves.
- May work under mínimal and/or distant supervision; may make some independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context.
- Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
- Irregular work hours and long days, particularly during spring and fall fire seasons.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain.

This is a full-time (35 hours/week), hands-on, field-based position located in Merrillville, Indiana. It is expected to last approximately 2 years starting in July 2024.

**WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU**:
The Nature Conservancy in Indiana is looking for a Little Calumet River Crew Leader to join our staff in protecting more than 300 acres along the west branch of the Little Calumet River corridor in Northern Lake County, Indiana. The project area of interest is an approximate 10-mile reach from Kennedy Ave. to I-65, and it includes a mosaic of floodplain wetlands varying in quality and size. After over a century of industrial, agricultural, and residential development in the Calumet Region, most of this historically significant wetland system is now degraded and fragmented. Since 2018, TNC has played a role in restoration efforts geared toward restoring hemi-marsh habitat along the watershed of the Little Calumet River. Situated within an urban industrial area on the outskirts of Chicago, there are great opportunities here to restore and maintain natural areas that add to the quality of life for the local community.

**WHAT YOU'LL BRING**:
**Minimum Qualifications**:

- AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and 1-year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or similar field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with natural systems.
- Experience in ecological land management principles.
- Experience operating and/or repairing various types of equipment and machinery (e.g. lawn mower, chainsaw, brush cutter ).

**Desired Qualifications**:

- Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- 1-2 years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Some experience managing volunteers or entry level staff.
- Ability to recognize plant and animal species to complete preserve management activities.
- Knowledge/understanding of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation/conservation or similar field.
- Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
- Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
