**Our Organization**:
San Diego Hunger Coalition (SDHC or Hunger Coalition) leads coordinated action to end hunger in San Diego County, supported by research, education, and advocacy. SDHC is committed to ensuring that every human facing hunger has immediate and equitable access to food assistance sufficient to see them safely through their time of need. Our Hunger Free Navigator Program and CalFresh 101 Training provide community residents and agencies with the information and resources to better connect people experiencing nutrition insecurity to available food assistance.
**AmeriCorps Anti-Hunger Corps VISTA Program**:
The Anti-Hunger Corps VISTA program aims to reduce hunger and poverty and build the capacity of the agencies that address these issues. Hunger Free America (HFA), in conjunction with some of the nation’s most effective anti-hunger and poverty organizations, engages VISTA members and partnering organizations in moving families beyond the soup kitchen by breaking down barriers and providing improved access to healthful, nutritious foods.
**Project Description**:
The San Diego Hunger Coalition, in partnership with Hunger Free America, is seeking a full-time VISTA member to play a critical role in expanding our outreach and supporting the dissemination of community resources to help connect more people to food assistance. This position is designed for an individual passionate about creating multimedia content to inform people and create more equitable access to food assistance in San Diego County.
**Responsibilities may include**:
Strengthen creation and dissemination of SDHC resources & training curriculum based on SDHC’s 2024 target populations to ensure timely delivery and maximum use of regularly updated materials.
- Identify 3-5 areas of highest nutrition insecurity and/or highest potential CalFresh Enrollees based on SDHC developed maps
- Build and/or reinforce partnerships in each area to create a network of recipients for regularly updated resources & any special population trainings
- Create a partner matrix to include contact information, area/populations served etc for SDHC staff to utilize after VISTA’s service has concluded
- Create efficient system of communicating appropriate resources in MailChimp, with a goal of 50% open rate
Developing a community empowerment program to provide an actionable path, with the Hunger Free Navigator (HFN) Training as a first step, for interested residents to support SDHC’s efforts to create equitable access to food assistance.
- Research existing volunteer programs in San Diego and within hunger sector for best practices - Create guidebook to take away from the HFN Training to include actionable steps for sharing knowledge with their communities
- Establish process to connect Navigators to partner orgs in their community to volunteer with to share their food assistance knowledge
- Using existing Navigator distribution list in MailChimp, create a system to organize Navigators by region to efficiently share targeted resources or communication
- Develop survey and determine appropriate cadence to send to Navigators to track success & effectiveness of program
- Attend organization lead trainings, participate in self-guided online learning, webinars and online trainings hosted by USDA, the California Department of Social Services and state and national advocates.
**Preferred Skills**:
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills; exhibits compassion and empathy, working well with people of all ages and genders from all ethnic, social, economic and sexual orientation backgrounds.
- Ability to work independently and take projects from concept to completion.
- Preferably bilingual, English & one of the additional languages listed below.
- Arabic, Burmese, Khmer, Chinese, Creole, Farsi, Hmong, Karen, Korean, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Filipino, Tigrinya or Vietnamese.
**Time Commitment**:
This is a **one-year, full-time position beginning August 12, 2024**. You are expected to be available for the needs of your community and project with a minimum of 35 hours a week. Because AmeriCorps VISTA service requires a full immersion in the project and community, there are restrictions on outside full-time employment, along with some restrictions on political and religious activities.
**Housing & Transportation**:
You are responsible for finding your own housing and must have access to a vehicle.
**PLEASE NOTE**:San Diego Hunger Coalition is currently working remotely five days a week with various in-person activities. Applicants must live in San Diego County or can relocate for the duration of your service year.
