The Department of Employment Services (DOES) is the agency who connects District residents, job seekers, and employers to opportunities and resources that empower fair, safe, effective working communities.

The Unemployment Compensation Claims Investigator will serve in the Benefit Accuracy Measurement Unit (BAM). BAM is responsible for the collection and analysis of necessary data to assess the validity of UI benefit payment activities and to assess the underlying causes of error in the UI benefit payment and collection of UI taxes as well as to recommend corrective action to the problems identified.

**Duties and Responsibilities**

Performs work of moderate difficulty which involves analyzing agency and employer records to determine if improper payments of unemployment benefits have occurred and/or if fraudulent claims for benefits have been made.

Reviews, examines, investigates, develops, adjudicates, and authorizes payment of the full range of unemployment claims to verify the work performed by other claims examiners, to assess the errors found and to recommend easy to avoid such errors. Claims Examiner refers cases to appropriate office for final adjudication and/or judicial review. Specifically, the incumbent:
Reviews claim files to ensure that UI determinations are factually and legally accurate, adequate, and acceptable in compliance with the applicable laws, regulations policies, procedures, precedents, and other pertinent criteria.

Conducts on-site visits with employers to verify unemployment claims against the District of Columbia and other jurisdictions; makes determinations concerning the claimant's eligibility and entitlement to the benefits for which he/she filed a claim and impose any disqualifications.

Detects errors in wage records and makes corrections.

Conducts on-site work searches to verify facts and to secure information surrounding separation issues needed to adjudicate claims of an unusually novel and highly complex nature.
