Reporting to the Associate Dean/CAO, the Media Communications Specialist will lead external communications for the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television (TFT). This pivotal role involves developing and implementing strategic communication plans that elevate the visibility and impact of TFT, positioning the School and its faculty as leading experts in their respective fields. The Media Communications Specialist is tasked with leveraging faculty expertise to secure earned media opportunities, enhancing the School’s reputation and demonstrating its influence in the arts and academic communities. This includes proactively identifying newsworthy stories within the School, crafting pitches that highlight TFT’s unique contributions to the arts and scholarship, and promoting our faculty as essential sources for expert commentary. Additionally, the role involves writing compelling content for UCLA-owned news channels and spotlighting faculty research and creative endeavors that gain recognition in top-tier peer-reviewed journals and prestigious venues. The Specialist will also write engaging stories that communicate TFT’s achievements and the significant impact of its faculty and programs. The Specialist will build and maintain strong relationships with media professionals across print, broadcast, and online platforms to ensure effective story placement. Monitoring and analyzing the effectiveness of these efforts through data and metrics is essential to continually refine our media strategy. This position requires close collaboration with various units within UCLA TFT to ensure unified messaging and strategic alignment. Duties are primarily conducted onsite during regular business hours, with potential for a flexible working schedule. Extended hours, including weekends, evenings, and occasional holidays, may be required, along with light travel. The targeted salary for this position is $10,000/month.

- Minimum of 10 years full-time professional experience in news media or public relations, preferably in work related to arts, entertainment and/or higher education (required)
- Demonstrated record of successful national, regional and local media relations planning, implementation and story placements. (required)
- Demonstrated reporting and writing skills and ability to identify story placement opportunities and think strategically about communications. (required)
- Demonstrated understanding of media analytics and metrics to identify strategies for sustained, repeatable placement success. (required)
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate public events that can be used to advance institutional objectives. (required)
- Outstanding written and oral communications skills. (required)
- Ability to work cooperatively with other individuals and departments, including senior leadership, faculty and media relations and communications colleagues. (required)
- Demonstrated ability to successfully coordinate multiple ongoing tasks and responsibilities simultaneously. (required)
- Demonstrated ability to meet strict deadlines and respond effectively to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment, with solid professional judgement. (required)
- Demonstrated experience with web, social media and digital technology. (required)
- Demonstrated record of implementing new technologies and new communication tools. (preferred)
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of current events, issues and developments in arts, entertainment and higher education. (required)
