**The City of Oakland is currently recruiting to fill one (1) vacancy for the position of Assistant Fire Marshal (Sworn) in the Fire Prevention Division of the Oakland Fire Department. The Fire Prevention Division is responsible for fire prevention, investigation, and commercial inspections. The Sworn Assistant Fire Marshal performs a variety of administrative, technical, and supervisory tasks related to vegetation management, environmental hazards, fire code inspection, fire investigation, engineering services, and fire suppression; and performs other related duties as assigned. Additionally, the Sworn Assistant Fire Marshall serves as the primary liaison between sworn staff assigned to the Operations Bureau and the Fire Prevention Division.**

**Examples of the Work Functions**

Scenario 1:
Assistant Fire Marshal Roberts is assigned to plan, develop, implement, and direct a wildland urban interface fire protection program within the Wildfire District. They oversee and manage the vegetation management and commercial inspection programs and develop training, standard operating procedures, and educational materials for the vegetation management and commercial inspection programs.
Function 1:
Understands and applies knowledge of wildland urban interface fire protection and fire life safety protection. Works with fire prevention staff and field operations staff to implement and direct the wildland-urban interface fire protection program and commercial building inspection. Reviews and proposes any changes to these programs to ensure successful completion of vegetation management and annual building inspections, including fuels reduction and mitigation activities.
Scenario 2:
Assistant Fire Marshal Roberts responds to a request from the assigned fire investigator for assistance after a greater alarm fire. Assistant Fire Marshal Roberts oversees the investigation of major fires, fires of suspicious origin, or fires which involve loss of life. They search the fire scene for physical evidence. They may respond to major emergency events and perform in a supervisory capacity.
Function 2:
Acts quickly and decisively under emergency conditions to employ a well-organized plan of action. Exhibits a clear sense of priorities in terms of urgency and importance. Communicates effectively and demonstrates resiliency under stressful conditions. Works well as a team with both the incident commander and fire investigator on scene. Communicates any concerns and explains decisions effectively. Understands and applies knowledge of building construction and fire behavior. Uses this knowledge to continually adjust and monitor the situation and assist with fire investigation. Understands the principles of fire dynamics. Follows the directions of the incident commander.
Scenario 3:
Assistant Fire Marshal Roberts plans, schedules, supports, and participates in providing a broad range of public education to groups and individuals in fire prevention, suppression, fuel reduction, and vegetation management. Provides information to the public and promotes goals and objectives related to wildland fire prevention. Plans and implements public education programs designed for various stakeholders such as neighborhoods, schools, churches, and homeowner associations.
Function 3:
Understands how to create curricula to teach and present information to various stakeholders such as neighborhoods, schools, churches, and homeowner associations. Shows the ability to explain and answer questions when presented by individuals. Maintains composure when challenged and seeks meaningful engagement with members of the public. Conducts analysis to determine how the success of educational programs has impacted key performance indicators of fire safety awareness. Develops and executes alternatives strategies if key performance indicators show a need for improvement.
