- BACKGROUND

With a comprehensive rights-based framework underpinning its conservation and sustainable development efforts, IUCN recognizes that protecting and promoting women’s rights and advancing gender equality, including through women’s empowerment, and addressing gender-based violence, are not only globally agreed imperatives in their own rights but fundamental to meeting its mission. The Human Rights in Conservation team spearheads efforts to drive and support gender-responsive actions across the Union, with members and through a wide array of projects and partnerships, including a 20 year programme with USAID called AGENT - Advancing Gender in the Environment.

Recognizing women as agents of change and the value of diverse knowledge, experiences and capacities of women and men alike, AGENT envisions a world that approaches environmental work at all levels with gender-responsive policy and action. One of the pillars of work under AGENT is filling data gaps on gender and environment through research, data analysis and statistics to inform more robust gender-responsive environmental policy-making and programming. This includes producing IUCN research measuring the environmental and social outcomes of gender-responsive environmental and climate programming; piloting a gender equality and climate policy scorecard in collaboration with partner organisations; developing a gender and environment online course, among others. AGENT leverages this data and information to influence broader policy, programming and institutional strategies and goals, including in environmental decision-making processes (i.e., UNFCCC and CBD) and with varied members and partners to improve institutional tools and capacities in environmental organizations and networks. Through AGENT, IUCN also engages in global gender and environment data networks, including as co-convener of the Gender and Environment Data Alliance (GEDA), a joint commitment to the Feminist Action for Climate Justice (FACJ) Action Coalition of UN Women's Generation Equality Forum (GEF).

The entry-level Gender Programme Support officer will report to the Gender Programme Officer (P1) as well as the AGENT Chief of Party Senior Gender Programme Manager (as a matrix manager) and focus on supporting AGENT gender and environment data and research activities. This position will also work hand in hand with the Programme Officers and Senior Advisors, Consultant Advisors, and other key colleagues, including communications, knowledge management, learning and library and other units, as well as other Global Programmes, as needed.- Conduct data entry and assist with queries and drafting of findings in IUCN’s datasets and statistics work, including for the piloting of the gender equality and climate policy scorecard, among others.
- Assist with gender and environment data collection and compilation, analysis and writing for IUCN researches on gender and environment, including a new IUCN ISBN publication on the environmental and social outcomes of gender-responsive environmental and climate programming, as well as with coordination with other experts, peer-reviewers and partners;
- Support drafting of content for the gender and environment online course and other AGENT publications as well as summarizing findings into presentations, reports or communications inputs, as needed.
- Sustain IUCN facilitation of the Gender and Environment Data Alliance (GEDA), including liaising with members, planning and organizing members’ meetings, and supporting with IUCN-led workplan activities, as needed.
- Provide support across other AGENT activities and to the Human Rights in Conservation Team, including, e.g., supporting the RISE grants challenge and GBV-ENV Center, gender and climate change policy work, among others, as needed.
- REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as social sciences, international development/relations, environmental specific fields, human rights, and/or gender studies.
