Summary:
The BHU/ED Flex RN reports directly to the BHU Director. The BHU Director will collaborate with the ED Director and ED Nurse Manager on the BHU/ED Flex RNs schedule competencies orientation performance evaluation etc. The BHU/ED Flex RN will be assigned to work either on BHU or ED to care for patients with behavioral and/or psychiatric complaints depending on hospital operational needs. The BHU/ED Flex RN works their assigned every other weekend and every other holiday.

The BHU/ED Flex RN will follow the same holiday requirements as regular staff nurses.

BHU/ED Flex RNs will be scheduled 48 hours per week. Scheduled hours may be flexed down up to 12 hours per week based on hospital need.

**Responsibilities**:
Assigns coordinates and monitors work of unit personnel to ensure patients receive necessary quantity and quality of care and that daily objectives are met

Does high level of patient assessment and ensures that plan of care and competent staff are assigned appropriately.

Provides Nursing Director and/or designee with report on all critically ill patients or unusual events.

Enhances productivity by assessing daily workload and capabilities of individuals and utilizes personnel efficiently.

Adjusts staff assignments for unscheduled staff absences or special needs.

Arranges for staff replacement and overtime authorization to meet unexpected or unusual demands of volume or case acuity as requested

Nursing Process:
Demonstrates competency in the key functions of the Registered Nurse Clinical II position description.

Communications:
Develops and maintains open and effective communication with nursing staff physicians and other care providers on the unit and builds and maintains constructive relationships throughout the hospital

Collaborates with Nursing Director for effective scheduling of staff on assigned shift.

Reports to Nursing Director on attendance and punctuality.

Provides input for performance evaluations.

Reports on-line occurrence reports requiring immediate attention to Nursing Director and/or Administrative Coordinator.

Consults with Nursing Directors and/or Administrative Coordinator on unusual or difficult technical personnel and administrative problems.

Other information:
Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing **or** licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Graduate of a school of nursing Baccalaureate in Nursing preferred with current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.

Conformity to the Code of Professional Nurses.

Understanding of the provisions of the Nurse Practice Act of the state of Rhode Island.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and sensitivity to cultural diversity in each step of the care process.

Minimum of 3 years acute inpatient behavioral health or emergency department behavioral health experience required. Current BLS required. PALS recommended. Safety Care Training to be completed within 90 days of hire if not already completed annual Safety Care Training. Certification preferred.

EXPERIENCE:
Registered nurses should develop general proficiency as a staff nurse within three months of employment.

For specialty units general nursing experience appropriate to the specialty is preferred.
