Future SDAIHC - San Diego American Indian Health Center
**The Position**
The Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) assists dentists during examination and treatment of dental patients.
1) Maintaining a professional relationship and positive attitude with co-workers, the public, patients and all SDAIHC staff, Board of Directors and vendors
2) Maintaining the highest professional ethics and is honest in dealing with people; is a model for all employees through his/her actions
3) Striving to learn more and is receptive to learning different ways of doing things
4) Displaying enthusiasm toward the work and the mission of San Diego American Indian Health Center
5) Demonstrating clear knowledge of SDAIHC clinic structure, standards, procedures and protocols
**Essential Functions**
- Prepares Dental patient, sterilizes and disinfects instruments, sets up instrument trays, prepares materials, and performs four handed dentistry during dental procedures.
- Takes and records medical and dental histories and vital signs of patient.
- Takes and monitors digital dental diagnostic x-rays as directed by the dentist.
- Makes preliminary impressions for study casts and occlusal registrations.
- Pours, trims, and polishes study casts; fabricates custom bleaching trays; cleans and polishes removable appliances.
- Assists dentist in management of medical and dental emergencies.
- Instructs patients in oral hygiene and plaque control programs.
- Provides and explains postoperative instructions prescribed by dentist.
- Charts and records treatment information in patient Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
- Applies fluoride varnish to teeth when directed to do so by the dentist.
- Inventories and orders supply and materials for the back office.
- Maintains dental equipment and coordinates repair of equipment when necessary.
- Applies sealants, fabricates provisional crown restorations, performs coronal polishing and other dental auxiliary duties as approved by the Dental Board of California.
- Coordinates sending and receiving lab cases with outside labs.
- Attends monthly staff meetings and mandatory trainings or obtains and completes trainings at a later date if unable to attend.
- Maintain all licensure requirements needed to perform these duties, including maintaining CEUs.
- Communicate effectively with dentists and dental assistants to ensure efficient and adequate oral care is provided to patients.
- Other duties assigned by the dental director or dentist as required.
**Education/Experience**
Six months to one year related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience; certificate of completion of Dental Assistant Technical School.
Preference is given to qualified American Indian/Alaskan Natives in accordance with the American Indian Preference.
