**DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW**:
Birch Aquarium at Scripps aquarium.ucsd.edu is a non-profit exploration center for Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. The aquarium showcases over 60 habitats of fish and invertebrates. The interactive museum features research discoveries by Scripps scientists and engages visitors of all ages.

Our goal is to promote conservation efforts that protect our ocean planet. We educate visitors on how our world works and inspire them to become stewards of the planet. Our conservation efforts are based on scientific research, and we aim to connect people with nature and with a shared sense of responsibility to care for our planet Earth.

**Location: 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla, CA 92037.**

**POSIITON DESCRIPTION**:
Under general supervision of the Aquarium Curators, responsible for the maintenance of the specimens and associated life support systems for the assigned gallery display tanks and associated workspace at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps. Shares the animal care duties for approximately 6000 specimens representing over 500 species in over 250 tanks (65 for public view), including avian/penguin care. Observes specimen health and behavior and performs the care needed to keep them in healthy condition including cleaning, diving and other husbandry related activities. Maintain environmentally accurate displays. Observes and maintains life support systems and with the maintenance department ensures that all external life support systems are functioning properly. Keep accurate records monitoring specimen health, behavior, feedings, and locations. Assists in collections of specimens needed for all galleries.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Bachelors degree in marine biology or related field and or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 3+ years aquarist's experience in a public aquarium.
- Demonstrated knowledge marine vertebrates and invertebrates: natural history, behaviors, compatibility. Areas of focus may be California current, Western tropical Pacific or other areas as determined.
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic fish disease diagnosis, treatment, and necropsy procedures.
- Experience with aquarium life support systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of nitrification cycle as it pertains to aquarium systems. Understanding and ability to use water chemistry analysis on a regular basis to determine optimal husbandry conditions.
- Demonstrated knowledge and ability to collect specimens using SCUBA, hook and line, seine, and tide-pooling.
- Proven organizational skills and ability to keep accurate, consistent records relating to all aspects of animal care and systems maintenance.
- Demonstrated consistent excellent verbal, written and body communication skills; ability to work well with others and to address issues in professional manner through management and team
- Demonstrated skill in working with the general public.
- Demonstrated ability to follow all safety precautions for equipment and procedures while working on the job.
- Current SCUBA open water or higher certification
- Ability to pass diver medical physical to acquire AAUS scientific diver certification

**SPECIAL CONDITIONS**:

- Must have a valid CA Driver's License.
- Must be able to work weekends, seasonal extended hours (to 7PM), occasional nights, major holidays, during other staff's absence, and to respond to emergencies.
- SCUBA certification required. Rescue diver certification preferred. Will accept basic open water certification but must acquire AAUS Scientific Diver certification (Scripps Institution of Oceanography dive class) within 6 months.

Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18); completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) training will be required. Must meet CANRA compliance requirement per California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act ("CANRA," Penal Code sections 11164-11174.4).

Annual Full Pay Range: $50,989 - $60,615 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
